I'm just pointing out the type of trade we should expect with this GM
- jcragcrumple

Appropriate deals for the state of the team. Easy answer.

That can be rationalized to mean anything

What I expect based on previous history is mid round picks for a guy

Its not gaining anything either.
- ImThatGuy

How would it not be gaining anything? Getting rid of two guys who don't want to be here +. Trading a dman so we can allow the remaining guys to play each night and build some chemistry +. Adding a 20-30 goal scorer who is a true center, but forced to play wing +.
I just don't see anything negative about these moves.

You get a potential 45-50 point player with a fresh start.

His point totals from the last few years:

41
51
44
56
46

The Sabres would gladly take a player like that.

If he fails. You lost bogo and Erod. Whoopty do

Cap space to do what with exactly, overspend in UFA?
Trade picks/prospects that the Sabres still don't have?
There are still no prospects on this team at the forward position.

Mittlestadt is trending the wrong way, Cozens is probably two years away.

Thompson is Bailey/Baptiste, insert forward prospect.

All that said, this team is on pace for 84 points. One more win than "Tim Murrays disaster"

- ImThatGuy

Well how long do you think a prospect takes to get to the organization after there drafted. I suspect you will start seeing more of Botts choices hitting the Organization next year. When the pool is emptied before you get here takes a little while to fill it back up.

Based on history also shows that teams that are out of the playoffs typically aren't the ones trading away 1st round picks at the deadline. Typically it's the teams going for the Cup that trade them knowing that the pick will not be a lottery pick.
Think Ottawa was happy they went for it with Duchenne and gave the Avs the #4 OA pick?
How about SJ, who could be giving Ottawa a lottery pick this year for an overpaid Karlsson?

What's his favorite type of deal?

2nd, 3rd and change for Skinner
3rd for Vesey
3rd for Beaulieu
3rd for a 4th w/ scandalous and Pommer
4th for Frolik
4th for Sheary
2nd and 5th for miller.
Prospect for prospect Joker
5th for Wilson

So you tell me, what's more likely:

3rd, 5th, erod and a prospect for Bonino

Or 1st (say 7th overall), Mittelstadt and Johnson for someone like point.

If you're being honest, you know it's the first one

- jcragcrumple

Now go through every GM and see that this is the most common type of trade for .....all of them?

I dont expect him to even consider it. Nor do I think a contender would be selling off a piece worthy of a mid-to-high 1st at this time of year

So then do you not agree that this is the most likely move Botterill will make to address the 2nd and 3rd lines?

in 2 years he added sheary, vesey, skiner and johansson to the middle 6

and we still struggle with those 2 lines

Three 3rd line wingers, one 1st/2nd line winger and no real centers. It's not surprising

Get ready for this summer's trade: the center version of Jimmy Vesey for a 2nd and a 5th

I understand what the idea was for this year. Get guys on expiring deals to try and make a push. Realize that it was likely not going to work out, and hope that some of the young guys would take strides.

Vesey - has a role, is likely under-utilized to gain offensive production
Sheary - still as streaky as he ever was
Mitts - no step - demoted
Olofsson - Great impact
Thompson - no/injured
Asplund - Yes - stepped in and doesn't look out of place
ERod - can't produce the same as last year
MoJo - streaky - maybe gets it back when skinner is healthy
Jokiharju - Productive/steady on the back end
Lazar - Proving his worth
Frolik - too early to tell, likely not a significant impact offensively

It's an experiment that wasted another season.

If they got rid of Murphy they could save 7.2 mill on the cap. But unless they resign Lawson or go after 1 of the DE available in FA can't see it happening cause we would be very short handed at DE.
- Buff36

Yeah, the thinking for me is go after a stud pass rusher and then let Murphy or Lawson go

beating a dead horse however, IMO this team needs to spend as much capital as required (picks with risto, mitts or our better prospects) on a #2 Center

I have always said that unless your picking in say the top 7, first round picks are a crap shoot. I would gladly give my unprotected 1st round pick ++ for a true #2 center that has term on his contract at whatever the cost.

Go get me Malkin, Rakell, Point, RNH, Kadri over pay if you have too.

and all of this was in the last 19 drafts

- homiedclown

Well i can list a bunch of Prospects that have worked out too

And Coyle is another overpaid 3C that isn’t the answer at 2C
Maybe Mitts isn’t either?
But at least he has a higher ceiling and has a shot at being the answer
