I'm also from the school of thought that you need good veterans around your young players to help them grow. This being said, they also need to be good enough to help the team and not prevent better players to join in.

Thompson was looking pretty good early on this year but what has he done lately to justify bringing him back ahead of a guy doing very well in the AHL like Evans? Or Poehling?

I'm not saying he HAS to go, but I'm not sure he's that important either.

Well he kills penalties and is very good on faceoffs, not sure what a 4th line center can do to "justify bringing him back"

They should be able to contribute offensively also. Not every game obviously, but a good 4th liner still has around 10 goals per season.
