Not a bad cap hit for him?
So since Hintz is better would you pay Hintz 7.5 million? - Santo_44
depending on the length of contract obviously, but yes, rather have hintz on a 7.5AAV/6y contract on my team than willie at 6.9aav |

After playoffs lots of people will ask for Nylander to be traded.
He's just not a guy that wants to win at all cost. - MaximusAurelius
Well let's wait and see on that. |

if you listen closely during Pens games in the 2017 playoffs, when short players are on the ice from the other team, someone in the dressing room bangs on a garbage can.

Mobility and the ability to move the puck quickly is an awful lot more important than size on defense, thanks |

Until the leafs add a d he’s on the roster
But it’s kind of funny how everyone is boasting about size and we all want to kick off the biggest guy. |

I find this to be the moment when all of the "defense wins championships" hockey ghouls awoke from underground and shambled out of the dirt and grime, shaking off the dust and muck as they trudged into the light moaning, "See? D! D! D!" (This is also how many bad pornos start).
The St. Louis Blues have a fantastic defensive core, and a forward group that is not only capable of playing hard on the wall, they are also capable of putting the puck in the net. It's definitely a model structure that always has a chance to win.
The thing is that there are so many different ways to win and that's what the core is - it's not about, "What about Washington? What about Pittsburgh? What about Detroit? . . ." because different compositions and styles work based on the support.
The one thing that is absolutely constant is that the teams that win have the will to play through the physicality of playoff hockey. You don't need to hit, you don't need to fight - but you need to be able to take a number of hits to make the play every other day for 50 days. You need to absorb hits when you have bruises on bruises and re-opened cuts on top of healing injuries.
I love the skill of this Leafs team, but I'm not sure if they have that level of toughness yet. They remind me alarmingly of the 2000s Senators. They could skill the poop out of you, but when push came to shove - they were pushed and shoved. |

i'm not complaining about the leafs.
size and experience matters in the playoffs on defense; dubas seems aware of this.
you can have a 1-2 dmen missing one of those things.
but if you going for a long cup run, a guy like sandin who is missing both probably shouldn't be expected to play a big part of it this year. |

Any rookie should probably not be expected to be a cornerstone of any team success. learning curve is too steep in all aspects of being with the pro club |

I think evaluating someone off size is (frank)ing dumb
Size will help any D for sure....but you evaluate a player off talent.
Chara is not the best D in the world because he is 6' 9". He is where he is because of his size and skill.
Then you have Spurgeon who doesn't have the size but makes up for it for his incredible hockey sense and skill.
There aren't many D I would take Spurgeon over...Easily a top 15 D. |

This. Toughness isn't about beating the piss out of the other team, it's about having the team as a collective willing to battle through the endless amounts of abuse they're going to get in the playoffs and not lose their heads.
You have to know you're going to get pummeled taking the puck to the net, and you have to be willing to keep doing it. |

You really weight size and experience way too much man.
It is a quality asset to have but at the end of the day it is just an asset not what makes a player.
Now you can't have a D group full of 19 year olds but a 19 year old can absolutely be a big part of a playoff run. |

I'm a guy that prefers to watch some smash and hit hockey with the skill. But, I didn't see the Leafs getting "pushed and shoved" in the playoffs the last two years. Maybe that first year - Matthews was too quiet with Chara blanketing him. But last year I thought the push and shove was pretty even. And the year before against the Caps I don't recall the Leafs being "intimidated" at all.
I think they elevate the "battle" in the playoffs. They did last year. The kids need ramp it up one more notch. And of course Freddy needs to be good.
