Very interested to see where he goes. He's sick, but goalies are always a wildcard. I love that as a 17 year old having a bad WJC has soured idiots on him. What 17 year old goalie has ever had a good WJC? Fleury? Vasilevski? It's rare as hell.

You know, it's the best chance to get a sense of best-on-best at that age level. Some guys impress who never even approach the impression they leave the WJC. Some guys fail to impress who elevate their game way beyond what they showed.
A good example is a guy like Svechnikov. I was not impressed with him at the WJC, and I saw him at the Young Prospects game, and was equally unimpressed with him there - but he's looking good now.
For me that guy is currently Byfield. His numbers in the O are gaudy; but he was not effective at the WJC (recognizing he's younger does excuse him somewhat), and was invisible in the Young Prospects game this year.
I like to see something that sets a player apart from their peers when they get into best-on-best. |
