You know, it's the best chance to get a sense of best-on-best at that age level. Some guys impress who never even approach the impression they leave the WJC. Some guys fail to impress who elevate their game way beyond what they showed.

A good example is a guy like Svechnikov. I was not impressed with him at the WJC, and I saw him at the Young Prospects game, and was equally unimpressed with him there - but he's looking good now.

For me that guy is currently Byfield. His numbers in the O are gaudy; but he was not effective at the WJC (recognizing he's younger does excuse him somewhat), and was invisible in the Young Prospects game this year.

I like to see something that sets a player apart from their peers when they get into best-on-best.

7 games under a new coach, with new linemates and likely in a role you aren't used to.

best on best is great and all, but it's not always a great indicator of what these guys will one day be.

Hard to say one indicator is better than another. Besides Carolina will draft a 5'10" centre at 15th with their own pick and be happy. Then they can have Jake Neighbours with the pick they got from the Leafs.
