interesting piece on Jack Campbell from a few years ago...seems he struggled early on with expectations and ended up trying to model his game after Hellybuck, whom he was playing with in the AHL early on in his career. This just messed him up and the goalie coach in L.A. had to completely rebuild his game/style from scratch.
Also seems early on he struggled to maintain focus after early/bad goals, but that has been fixed now? Hope so, as I don't know if the Leafs are good team for players that don't do well with pressure and meeting high expectations.

We should all thank the hockey gods we got Matthews. He could turn out to be the best Leaf ever. It is a joy to watch him every game. - Hockey_Reverend
Man, it was something else.. Watching him slam Skjei to the ice and then stopping a Kreider partial breakaway from happening, he is so good all over the ice..
It's such a treat to watch him play. |

well.. for me it is an important thing.
this just isn't a team which is great to watch - it's like they want to be the Harlem Globetrotters of hockey.. not what I'm looking for in a hockey team. - MaximusAurelius

Let's put it in context, we don't need Campbell to be better than Andersen, we need Campbell to be several levels better than Hutch, which he is... Also, getting Clifford, with salary retained was a great move.

I think Pierre climbs the ladder bumping one of the top 9 out of the mix. He and Mikky should be good value guys for another year or two.
Some top 9 forward is going to be moved but I kinda doubt it's Hyman. If he's looking to be paid like a 20+ goal guy for 4+ years then I'm with you - move on. But if he's content to realize he's the hardworking 3rd liner riding wingman with M&M and will take Kerfoot type $$$ then I say lock him up.
Kerfoot would be my preferred move. He wasn't a great centre but I feel like he's been invisible most nights since they pushed him to the wing. - The Law
so what's left for this year?
upgrade ceci (maybe push holl down to the 3rd pair)?
upgrade at 3C? i like engvall better on the wing.
goat and timapoop are pretty pointless players. maybe grab another 4th liner?
monkey wrenches are: light on draft picks now and as it stands, we still need to drop to 21 player players if rielly is healthy.

it was more fun watching the leafs when we had Grabovski, Kulemin etc.
not because we had a better team, but at least there was some sort of feeling that they were all trying to their best to get a win, in spite of the weaknesses.
this team just doesn't feel as caring that much. - MaximusAurelius
Last night It looked like Auston was getting pissed and trying to get the leafs back in the game by going a bit beast mode...that is a good sign imo.
The Grabo/Kuly/Mac line was one of the best lines in the past 15 years. they were dominant for the season and half they were a thing. |

I've missed a period or two here or there (and all of yesterdays game) in the last 3 or 4 games - but aside from moments when he's good with the puck, I've thought Marner looks disinterested in retrieving or battling for the puck. The defensive side of his game of late - and to be honest a lot of this year - just hasn't seemed where it was last year.
I love just about everything Matthews does, and I think there's more to come with him. |

sv % is at a low point. still, it will be a mini-miracle to make the playoffs in-spite of the backup goaltending we got to this point.

I like the move a lot...well a normal amount really. Fu3king finally Dubas.
I really can't believe we have players like Hutch and Marincin on this team still. If anything...wtf took so long???
The thing that really fu3ks with my head is how some of you guys can find sh1t to complain about with everything. How in the love of fu3k can you complain about this move...a couple of 3rd round picks and Trevor Gretzky Moore?!?!??!?! Jeezus fu3k.
We got a goalie and a player who can actually play and HIT and FIGHT for Trevor Moore and 2 picks that may never amount to anything.
One more D man and this team is MUCH better for a playoff run. (Dillon? LD?)
When the team is healthy we would look more like this:
Hyman, Matthews, Marner
Micheyev?, Tavares, Nylander (Micheyev may be out longer?)
Clifford, Kerfoot, Kapanen
Engvall, Spezza, Goat
Reilly?(Dillon), Barrie (Reilly may be out longer?)
Muzzin, Holl
Sandin, Ceci
Dermott
Andersen
Campbell
(frank), that's a lot better. Clifford, Micheyev and Hyman could move up and down the LW depending on which line needs to intimidate more.
Dillon for Johnsson + before the TDD, would be even better...(and Dillon being here in case Muzzin doesn't sign for the right price or expansion draft (?) isn't a bad thing either.)
Baby steps fellas.

Matthews I always thought could become a Selke winner and Rocket Richard trophy winner at same time - not sure whether that ever happen (and if so, who was last one to do that). Maybe my expectations of him were too high though - I had hoped he would develop more on the defensive side of the game, and be there in all situations.
Maybe I misunderstood - but I think I read he had no intentions of killing penalties? ("never did so, and no intention to start doing so anytime soon").
I said 2-3 seasons ago that the only reason why so many people had McDavid over Matthews was Canadian vs. 'Merican - but it seems that McDavid has made much more progress over last 3 seasons than Matthews.
I still believe Matthews can become the more complete player - and actually more valuable to a team than McDavid. Right now not looking as it though.
That being said - I always liked Marner and I think it is a pleasure to watch him play when in his groove. If you are looking for effectiveness - the edge goes to Matthews. Entertainment though, to me personally it's Marner over Matthews. |

Another goalie I doubt will make much difference without a good shut down defenseman.....now need to trade a package something like Johnsson, Bracco, Cecie for one |
