According to cap friendly the Rangers have 14.5 mil in cap space next year. Add in Smiths 4.5 without retention, yea right, thats 19 million.
Lemieux will be around 2.5 and AG 3
What do you think it will take for a team to take Smiths full cap hit in a trade?? - Brukie
I am looking at capfriendly and they show us at projected cap space for next season as $16.505 mill.
Brendan Smith grew up less than 4 hours from Ottawa. He has a limited NTC and I don't know which teams are on it. If he accepts a deal to go home, I could see the Senators being interested because his contract pays out LESS than his cap hit for next year. Smith and a small sweetener like a lower draft pick would seem realistic to me. |

What is Smiths buyout numbers? That’s a more realistic option unfortunately |

Wow, almost seems like a no brainer to buy him out. That 780k is really nothing the 2nd year. |

No, he's right. You're a jackass.
Saying Shesty hasn't played as a pro is silly. It takes more talent to shine in the KHL when you have to be worried about your plane falling out of the sky or your paycheck bouncing on you!!!
Same as all the press who keep talking to Quinn about making the jump to being an NHL coach when he had already been an assistant with Colorado. - Tonybere
You can go (frank) off too Tony
Seriously though. You can't take the caliber of the NHL and compare it to the KHL. I would argue even some AHL teams are better than the KHL. |

But, adding this to our previous buyouts would bring next seasons dead cap space total to over $10M!!!! That basically makes it a no brainer that no more buyouts can happen. |

I understand what you are saying about going home. But lets face facts here, Smith knows next year will most likely will be his last year playing in the NHL, (maybe) would you want to go home for the last year and be part of the worst team in the league? |

if they trade him and retain 2.7 million (50%) there's no difference though
other than the indignity of more buyouts listed |

Shesty played in the second best league in the world (agreed?) as a 20-23 yo and his numbers IMPROVED. I like to argue and always up for the debate but I think the kid is the real deal too!! |

I just think there was a lot of expectations for him, and how many goalies have so much hype coming into the NHL and fall flat on their faces. I'm glad I was wrong, because he looks awesome. |

Yeah, teams have been burned on hype, for sure. But, his numbers were so consistently off the charts, I never let myself doubt he was going to come in and be awesome!! |

No doubt he's been great, but I said it last year with Carter Hart and I'll say it next year if Sorokin comes over: I think the second year for a goaltender is the most important, in terms of evaluating them earlier in their careers.
I think players/coaches start to learn goalies tendencies when they have a good amount of NHL game tape to study and figure out what their strengths and weaknesses are. Doesn't mean I'm saying nobody should be excited about him because he's been real good in his limited action, but goalies are so weird and fickle that I'm always hesitant to jump on a bandwagon right out of the gate. |

Yeah, his numbers were insane, almost too good.
I had more expectations for Kakko over Shesty honestly. |

Yeah, and that was kind of my thinking, goalies are always tough to judge. I will say this though, the confidence he plays with and how (frank)ing fast he is with his positioning, I think he is the real deal. |

Yeah there's no doubt. I'd probably lean towards agreeing with you on that one. He and Sorokin were probably the best two goalies in the KHL. They also played for the two best teams, but their numbers were/are just insane.
Frankly, I'm kind of happy to see him doing well because that at least means that it's entirely possible Sorokin, if he comes over, shouldn't have his KHL numbers dismissed simply because it's the KHL and he played for a powerhouse team.
I just remember how over the moon Flyers fans were last year with Hart and I was kinda thinking...yeah he's playing unreal but I'd like to see how he fares once teams have the time and tape to study him in depth and can really get a read on how he plays. So far this year in 32gp his numbers aren't particularly special. I don't think that means he's trash by any means, but he's not the next super-goalie to step in and be a star from day 1, that's all. |

Whats the deal with Sorokin anyway? You would think seeing Shesty playing with the Rangers now has to be some motivation for him to get his ass over to you guys. I'm sure they had a personal rivalry in the KHL seeing as they were the 2 best goalies

Certainly looks like your logic is sound.
I expect once Sorokin comes over, he and Shesty will relish their renewed rivalry amidst the larger rivalry of NY!!! Should make for great hockey every time. |

His KHL deal is up after this season. Season ends at the end of this month then they have playoffs starting in March. I think the, very cautious, expectation is that he wants to make the jump to the NHL next year. CSKA is probably going to back a dump truck full of cash to his front door (and I believe they've already made him a substantial offer), so there's definitely a possibility that he decides to stay home and play there.
Ideal situation would be that he comes over here after his season and gets some AHL time to start acclimating to the smaller sheet. Greiss' deal is up after this season as well, so in a perfect world he would step in and share the net with his buddy Varly next year. He has to sign a 1 year ELC. |
