If they resign him wouldn't they protect him whether or not he gets an NMC? Otherwise whats the point of signing him if you could just lose him for nothing.
- TPC

I could see them giving him a 7 year 49 million deal without a NMC and then leaving him unprotected, thinking that contract may be too much for Seattle, maybe Rangers have someone even more desirable to grab for Seattle, like maybe Georgiev

Gotta think thats the worst case scenario. You have to get value in return for Georgi

Yep. If Georgie is still here by the expansion draft, the situation has been badly mishandled.

If that is the plan then they should just trade him now. You can't just lose Kreider for nothing. Doesn't make sense to keep him, lock him up just to leave him unprotected

but then Georgie is the only player we lose in draft and and then we start thinking about the careers of Huska, Lindbom and Wall

Georgi is the ONLY goalie we have to protect, we can't lose him in expansion draft.

I'm with you. Losing Georgi for nothing isn't ideal, but we already have a bunch of guys in the system. I have full confidence that someone would just be the next man up.

Either we trade Georgi or we somehow end up with Shesty and Georgi as our tandem going forward. Losing him for nothing is a failure

we have to lose somebody, we aren't going to like who it is no matter what

I think we'd probably all live fine if Hajek was who we lost though

I feel pretty much the same. My point was more that we cannot go through all of next season with a 3 goalie platoon. That doesn't serve any of them well.
It is not a perfect solution, but Georgiev has to be traded.

Question for all:

Can teams insert poison pill clauses into contracts specifically for expansion draft?

For example: This coming off-season we re-sign Georgi to a 2 year bridge contract for $5.5 mill dollars. We put a clause in that makes his salary go to $8 mill if selected in expansion draft. Is that legal?

What if losing Georgi meant we kept someone like Lindgren? I don't think we know what's a good result for the expansion draft until it's time.

Don't believe that's legal per the CBA, but will work on finding out.

No chance. There is no altering the salary. That's why guys can't renegotiate their contracts.

Yeah, really not much room for any poison pills in any contract. I guess you could make it so the contract is severely backloaded to time it with the expansion draft, but then if they don't pick him, you risk some sort of a career ending injury fluke and some nasty recapture later on. Georgie is a good goalie, but it's not like he's a franchise goalie or anything of the sort. I think the fans are just siking themselves out when it might not be a huge deal if the team lost him.

I think CK20 is a goner, all this contract talk is to try to drum up a bidding war. If the Rangers were really serious about signing him, the contract talks would have been a priority a few months ago. The only way he stays is if he signs for 6 x 6 without a NMC. Thats not going to happen

I brought this up over a month ago, with the way ADA and Fox have played, would you move Trouba by July 1st?

There would be quite a few teams that could use him..

Hello Toronto!!! Nylander-Trouba straight up?? Edmonton??? That would be (frank)ed up if they traded him there but he would rack up the points with Mcdavid.

Players salary can't vary more than 35% in adjacent years and 50% over the term of the contract

Yeah, a lot of deals have clauses that change over time.

For example, Boychuk had a full NMC for the first four years of his deal, and in the final three years he has a modified NTC that allows him to pick 8 teams he can't be traded to:
