Yeah and from a Pittsburgh perspective it does make sense. That first rounder isn't going to see the NHL for probably 4 years or so. Addison was probably one of their better prospects but still is a way off and may never even pan out.
To land Zucker for the next three seasons, plus this one, keeps them competitive while Crosby and Malkin are still top players. It's pretty logical for them. But when it all comes crashing down for Pittsburgh, it's going to crash and burn hard. Their system is more or less devoid of any talent now. - eichiefs9
I would add “if ever” to this statement while also saying that goes for any team in the top 5 in the conference. That’s one of many reasons why I think our first should be in play for the right player. |

I'm more than fine using our first, I just don't think any of the pending UFA rentals are a) worth it or b) the one missing piece that's going to put us over the top and make us a major Cup contender.
I'd be totally fine using it for a player with term, obviously providing it made sense. Lou wants to flip the 1st and something else for Dylan Strome? Sign me right the (frank) up. |

I think like Chiefs said, when it all comes to a head, its going to be a long time before they are competitive again. Unless they trade for Hall and get 3 overall firsts in a row - mdw7413
They will finish last win lotto land a stud and a year or two later win again and move up the board like the rangers or devils did and land another |

I think Shestorkin is going to be the huge turn around for the Rangers. Without him, and I love Georgie, I think the rebuild would take a lot longer. You guys need to get your commie (frank)ing goalie over for a proper rivalry |

Of course, but he's not wrong that the percentage of guys that go on to have long NHL careers picked that late is a major dropoff from the early picks. The percentage of guys that are real "all-star caliber" guys taken that late is even less. |

My point is there are a lot of really good players between 10 and 20 and a first is always good to have and use. Now if its for a guy that's a top 6 proven guy with term then I'm all for it. But for a rental no and Nelson was a late first 30th I believe and beau too and both are productive top 6 guys |

Who the (frank) is Soderstrom? - mdw7413
Drafted one rounder later than Sorokin in 2014, another goalie. He actually led his SHL team to a championship at like 20yo or something like that. He didn't play at all last year because of some mystery injury and has battled injuries this year too. He was somewhat highly touted for awhile but that's probably come and gone at this point. |
