He fits comfortably into the top-four of most teams in the NHL, and has proven that he can sit next to a #1 without issue to help balance pairings. His underlying numbers are elite.

No, but based on recent trades, a 3rd for DeMelo is ridiculously cheap. Yeah, he's not going to be the difference between missing the playoffs or winning the cup, but he's a good 4/5 guy on a decent roster. They should have at least gotten a 2nd or had a prospect with some upside included.

I agree he is a good player, but I don't think he is more than a 5th- 6th dman on a good team. Greene has more miles, but his reputation probably has a lot to do with his value and the return. And a 3rd comparable to a 7th? I don't know...

Which, when you look back on it, was Washington exploiting a gap in the market. We can also look at the Jensen trade from last year where Washington sent a 2nd and Bowey to Detroit for a worse player than Demelo.

It's been impending for several years now according to Spatso so I'm not sure
