I would not go that far! I am not certain what DeMelo really is. He has been Chabot's defensive partner and that could be helping his underlying stats. If it were not for the Karlsson trade he would still be San Jose's 6-7 defense man. I think that due to Ottawa being undermanned he got an opportunity to play.

DeMelo's underlying stats are good regardless of who he's paired with. Chabot's crater when he's with Hainsey or Zaitsev, away from DeMelo.

I don't know enough about Kempny to make a legitimate comparison one way or the other, but I will say that I've seen enough of DeMelo to know that he's going to be an incredible add for the Jets.

From gambling on retaining the 5th overall pick a couple years ago, to looking like genious' for acquiring a sharks 1st. You guys could get 2 top 5 picks this year. Something tells me you will be able to attract some quality UFA's in a couple years as this squad develops. If you can rent out Pageau for another 1st and bring him back in the offseason, I think the fan's might just forget about this past summer.

Reliable, top 4 dman that could play over 20m

You may not notice him for the most part (which is great) because he does the small things really well. He also occasionally joins the odd man rush.

This idea about not trading inside the conference is so dumb. Ottawa is a (frank)ing joke. Take the best deal you can get. I am a leafs fan and I feel so bad for Ottawa because their owner and GM are terrible. I can’t wait to watch Ottawa when Melnyk sells the team to someone who cares, it will be a treat.

Bizarrely, there appear to be some strange misconceptions floating around about DeMelo... like I've seen it repeatedly suggested that he's 24 (he's turning 27 in May), and that he's set to become an RFA (he'll be a UFA in July). Given that these things can be easily checked via a simple Google search, I would suggest refraining from believing too much random heresay about the deal.

That sure as hell didn't stop the Phaneuf or Zaitsev trades within the division, stealing the Leafs' assistant coach, or signing the likes of MacArthur, Ennis, and Hainsey. Or trading within the conference with the likes of Duchene, Zibanejad, Dzingel, and Brassard.

Any narrative about not trading within the division/conference is a bunch of horse$hit diversion, intended to justify getting a bad trade return.
