Shawn Simpson reporting that Demelo’s agent said he wanted to stay with the Sens.
“No money or term was discussed”
And Dorion didn’t want to comment. - Trilla
And Garrioch was saying the two sides "weren't even in the same ballpark". Would love to know what actually went down. |

I don't think one of these sources has to be lying, so much as just reflecting the different perspectives between the team and the agent. It's pretty clear that DeMelo was never part of the long-term plan in Ottawa, and it's understandable that a guy who's never made more than $900K/yr might want to take advantage of the biggest UFA opportunity of his career. I'm not thrilled with Dorion cashing in early on a deal that seemingly leaves value on the table, but if he really believed there was no chance to resign DeMelo to the kind of deal that makes sense in the context of the rebuild, then he was a diminishing asset that needed to be moved. |

You guys are all idiots. Doesn't even have a goal. Gets way more mins then he should. Clearly wants out or way too much money . Dorian was lucky to get anything for that bottom pairing d man. Obviously nobody wanted him. Why would they sign him with all the young d man in the system and can easily be replaced on July 1 if he was asking for multi million dollars per year. |

How?
Dillon deal actually makes the Sens deal look worse
We can’t catch a freakin break here. - Trilla
Well, in Dorion's/Melnyk's defence, it had been quite a few months since some boneheaded news came out about this team. We were just overdue. Will be there this Saturday against the Habs - this should be interesting.

JG Pageau has 2 tonight - now 24 goals this season! Crazy.
Guy deserves so much, really hope he gets a nice fat contract - but I still hope they trade him, get a 1st rounder + a 2nd round type prospect |

the empty net goal by Duclair tells you a lot about this team. all the guys wanted it for him. especially noticable was PAGeau in celebration. he is staying put. |

I hope that Demelo gets a solid deal on his next contract. I believe that 5 x $4M is reasonable for a guy that has produced solid results with every D-partner over the last 2 years. The only knock against him is that he has played on a bottom 5 team and teams don't play their A-game against us. I wish him well.
A third round pick was a low return. At that price, Dorion should have waited until closer to the deadline.
Kevin Cheveldayoff is a great evaluator of talent. I hope the trade pays off for Winnipeg. I would love to see them go on a nice run! |

Reliable, top 4 dman that could play over 20m
You may not notice him for the most part (which is great) because he does the small things really well. He also occasionally joins the odd man rush.
Overall, this deal makes the Jets a better team
Very underrated - Trilla
Wow. Ok great. When Greene went for a 2nd, i'd figure this guy was a fringe player. Glad he has been solid on a team that had alot of question marks heading into the season. Thanks for the synopsis. |

My guesses of what the ACTUAL return will be for the following players:
JG Pageau - 2020 1st, prospect/depth NHLer, possibly conditional pick
Namestnikov - 2020 4th (OR possibly 2021 3rd)
Ennis - 2020 3rd (could end up being 4th depending on demand)
Hainsey - late pick (not first 3 rounds; likely 5th-7th) |

(A) Mark Borowiecki
(A) Thomas Chabot
(A) Brady Tkachuk - AlfieisKing
but.
If the return was this low for demelo.....drop all your expected returns in your list by one or two levels.

The return for players that are pure rentals (no term on contract) is less than for a guy with a year or so left on his contract. |

I honestly can't tell if you're just trolling. Have you actually consistently watched him play in Ottawa? - PavohnDatsvares
Yes- I watched a good bottom pairing defenseman who could play spot duty in the top 4. Remember this is a last place team and we are accumulating as many assets as possible. Melo was not part of the future and went for market price. Stop overvaluing him and you would see that |

considering that Demelo was probably the best of the 4-5 dmen who have been traded so far, he clearly wasn't traded for the market price.
the best player brought back the worst return.......that's on Dorion for not appreciating or understanding the value of his NHL players.
I've said it 100 times....Dorion is a good "prospect guy". he's good at evaluating junior/college players and drafts well, but he has REPEATEDLY shown that he is completely incapable of judging professional level players with even a shred of competency. that's exactly what happened here. |

My issue with this conjecture is that it suggests the teams picking up Andy Greene, Marco Scandella or Brendan Dillon have a lens to resign them. They don't - none of those Dmen will likely resign with the teams that acquired them, so if that was the case for Demelo, why does that make him worth less? Demelo is also a UFA rental, and given the metrics, the numbers, the TOI, and the fact he did all that on a clearly terrible team - he should have gotten *at least* what the market is currently paying for for that kind of player. Add in he's only making 900K, making him easy to fit without the salary retention we've seen in those other deals. Add in that he's a RHD, rarer and more coveted than LHD. Add in the fact that he's not on the tail end of his career, and is likely easier to resign than the older Dmen who have gotten large contracts in the past. Most importantly and most problematic: add in the fact that he makes a young player significantly better than anybody else on the team - a player, mind you, who they JUST signed to a megadeal and want to nurture and blossom into a top Dman in the league.
When Methot was signed, I ragged it hard - I thought he was getting paid too much and had terrible numbers. I've learned a bit since then - you keep that steady asset around because it makes the other asset - his partner - better, and by proxy, more valuable. From an investment perspective, offloading Demelo will (at least in the short term) diminish Chabot's value and potentially worse, harm his development. Think about the Ryan contract, and how much this team's management loves diminished value - and think how myopic this move is in retrospect. It is tough to find such obvious chemistry, but with this team's management's pennypinching and insistence on justifying it's past bad moves, it tries to shoehorn Zaitsev into that role to validate the Ceci swap. They tried to shoehorn Ceci into that role for years to justify his high drafting pedigree, and in doing so missed out on trading him for Taylor Hall. I wasn't a huge Murray fan, but he was light years ahead of PD in plotting out a promising future. |

That might make sense, if not for the fact that, like Demelo, all three of Scandella, Greene, and Dillon are pending UFAs this offseason. Scandella and Dillon got more because those teams have better GMs. |

And now Alec Martinez - he of one goal, 8 points, a 4M contract, and -9 on the year, nets two seconds!!! This deal looks worse and worse each passing day. |

@PierreVLeBrun
tells us that he spoke to a number of teams around the NHL about the Sens return for Dylan Demelo. His response:
"No one was going to pay a second round pick for Dylan Demelo. I didn't get a single team that said, 'Yeah, they could have gotten a second.'" |
