Bill Meltzer: Musings and Quick Hits: Playoff Chase, Trade Deadline, Frost, Alumni & More - bmeltzer
In terms of the Jeff Carter rumor, I’m not for or against it. We don’t look very strong down the middle if Laughton is our third line center and I feel like JvR is wasted on the third line. Carter would offer more depth at center, good faceoff man and potentially three strong, skilled lines. Even if Patrick could return and you did make a Carter trade, it might be interesting to have Patrick at wing if and when he returns. Pitlick a third line regular? Pitlick is a fourth line player on a good team.
Again, not really for or against Carter. It’s more of a question of what goes the other way and I’m not willing to over spend. |

Lindros was a beast. Still feel that we were spoiled having him as a Flyer. I never appreciated his talent enough while he was here and I hated him when he left. Got to see what opposing teams' fans saw when he played for team Canada versus the US. Too bad his career was cut short.

Did you skip over the part where Bill went into detail how JVR has taken advantage of the matchups on the 3rd line? And that he's been lighting it up on the 3rd line ever since going there? |

I been thinking/saying this. But he's not a rental; you still have him next year (for only 3.25 M!!). But even if it costs us more assets, I much rather have Eric Staal than Jeff Carter. He would be a fantastic guy to add for this year and next year. Also would be a great mentor to have around for Patrick. |

Aside from Mario Lemieux, he was the most dominating player I ever got to see live (I only saw Gretzky in the 96 World Cup when he was on the downside). Every single time that he was on the ice, you had the feeling that something was going to happen, and it often did. If he'd learned to skate with his head up, he had a chance at being a top-10 all-time NHL player because there was nothing he couldn't do on the ice. |

One of the many ridiculous false narratives floated about Carter when he was here.

Getting Staal would be awesome but would probably cost a first plus a decent prospect
Lottery protected first plus O'Brien maybe? Or would it take someone like Brink
For the record, I dont think this is a trade the team should do, but I would assume it would look something like this:
To Minn: Raffl, O'Brien, and a lottery protected 1st
To Phi: Staal and a 4th rounder |

I would think about that. It's very steep price, but I think it buys time for Patrick recovery and Frost development (and Frost could play wing until a C opportunity arises again). Also a good 1-2-3 down the middle albeit 3 left-shot C. |

Updated my post with what I think a fair trade would be (Raffl included for cap reasons)
I dont think it's a trade they have to make, and could look bad down the road, but I absolutely wouldn't hate it and think it would help the flyers the next 2 years for sure
Really kinda boils down to how good you think O'Brien can be. We have a pretty stocked prospect pipeline so I'm not against giving up the pick, but if we do it better be for someone good |

can't say I watch any Wild games, but is Staal still their 1C? I can't help but think adding him and slotting him as the 3C and the favorable matches he'd get (just like JVR). He's got pretty good production for being on the Wild and facing the tougher opponents' lines. |

I know you would be. I dont think they should either, but I wouldn't be devastated if they did
I was just trying to outline what a potential trade would look like based on the recent deals that happened |

It's interesting when comparing a potential Staal trade to the Zucker trade..
Zucker is younger, higher cap, longer term, top 6er and got 1st + B(?) Defense prospect + Galchenyuk who was essentially a cap dump.
So for Staal, I'm guessing we could maybe do 1st Rd pick + Rubstov + Raffl/2nd. Is that an overpay? Rip away and disagree if you do, please.
It's hard to figure which roster player would go the other way to make the cap work tbh |

I'm meh on Carter. If he was an expiring contract, I'd like it more and I think having 2 more years on his deal is actually a negative for his trade value. If he gets moved, I think it would be for less than people think even if LA ate half of his cap. Age 35-37 Carter even at roughly 3 mil/year isn't a great deal to take on.
Edit: with that said, I'd explore it at the right price. |

I was at that World Cup game in the Wells Fargo Center. Best hockey I've ever seen. Best players in the world playing like it mattered. Incredible. Gretzky accepted a pass between his legs in stride. Just insane hockey talent on that ice. |

I was at all 3.
The building's inaugural event, USA vs. Canada, was spectacular. Lindros vs. Otto for the opening draw, the line brawl 20 seconds into the game, LeClair scoring the first goal. Stuff I'll never forget.
But man, the semi-final game between Canada and Sweden was by far the best hockey game I've ever witnessed. It went to Double OT, 13 seconds away from Triple OT. So much star power on the ice with legendary players all over the roster. It's probably the closest thing they've had to the 87 Canada Cup Final since. |

For sure would cost more but you're getting lower cap and shorter term. His NTC is modified 10 team no trade list. Maybe he wants some playoff hockey! |

Flyers should look at Trocheck from Florida, send Ghost the other way. Pretty much a dollar for dollar trade with Troch at 4.7 for 2 more years and Ghost at 4.5 for 3 more years.
Philly gets a good 3rd line center with some toughness Florida gets a puck moving D.
Trade makes sence for both teams Ghost will be revitalized going to the team he cheered for growing up and going to games with his grandpa and Philly gets a center to play on the 3rd line while making some more room for their defence prospects.
Freidman looked good when called up and could serve as a 7th d |

I would do that trade, and I like Ghost. But what would the Flyers have to add? |

Partial no-trade. He has a 10-team no-trade list. Would cost more than Carter because of his lower cap hit and shorter term. Also a better player at this late stage of their respective careers.
BTW, no-trade clauses hurt the seller more than the buyer because it cuts down on the potential destinations.
