The only player who received a bonus was Shipachyov and he had to return all but 86K of his 2M.

Certainly sounds like to me that the Canucks will not be able to pay the bonus and then terminate. So the question becomes does Eriksson walk away from 8M to help out Vancouver?

You’re missing one element, which is that a team is benefiting from actual salary vs salary cap. Bogosian, for instance was in the final year of his deal, and has earned less than his cap hit. Burmistrov was a one year deal, no savings there. I can’t say for sure, but I bet that Vegas was charged an equal amount towards the salary cap as Shipachyov was paid for his brief time there. Berglund is that one that would interest me, as the Blues saved about $1m in the first year. I can’t find any hard evidence of what they were charged against the cap for the season Berglund walked away, one way or the other.

I remember Ray Ferraro saying Teams within a division play each other something like a max of 5 times???? So the chances of said player that was traded actually making a difference in those games might be once or twice - the risk is low on an overall level so it’s not really a concern anymore.

There was a lot of chatter about Schneider to Edmonton but they had to pay a serious premium because of the divisional factor. Too bad Gillis didn’t relent, Canucks could have scored so many more goals!
