A young gm being taken advantage of. He has made some ok moves. But has one handcuff on already.

Matthews will walk at the end of his deal, and will test / blow the cap off the market.

I understand the cap just fine lol I'm still allowed to voice my displeasure with the system. Especially when your star players are getting paid peanuts in comparison and suggesting taking pay cuts. The nhl still generates Billions of dollars with a capital B. The owners are indeed still billionaires, and the players are still the product. I'm saying the system needs some possible tinkering i.e.) lessening RFA compensation, raising the cap, luxury tax vs. hard cap, and so on.

What I understand is the time value of money, getting paid now vs. down the road. A player like Laine is deserving of an 11 mil per contract right now, just as Matthews was/is.

Hypothetical, but do you think a team would have signed Laine to an 11 mil per multi year deal, if (4) 1st round picks weren't involved?

You DO understand the concept of league revenues right? You DO understand that Salaries, when compared across different sports, are relative and based on the amount of revenue a league brings in. You also DO understand that the NHL is a distant 4th when it comes to revenues for the big 4.

Maybe you dont and that is why you make your statements about what McDavid SHOULD be making. Based on what exactly?

- MBFlyerfan

Yes, I get that it varies and is calculated based on a portion of revenues. A distant fourth, at over 5 billion. It's a tough debate, but one that should be discussed and has been discussed on TSN.

McDavid's contribution and value to the league is far more than 12.5 million and far more than just the points he puts up in Edm (even still that justifies a higher pay).

Although i would like to see a move made tomorrow, it will be highly unlikely. Like Bill stated Flyers wont move ghost on the low.Unless a gm is desperate and over pays for him they will be quiet. I think they should see where Patrick and Lindblom are in the summer and make a decision from there.I dont think Patrick plays this year. I wish those two the best and hopefully they are back to full health.

It's not a tough debate at all. Simply compare the league revenues of other sports leagues and it's easy to see why the salaries of the players in each league differ.

Watching the leafs lose to their farm team zamboni driver has to be one of my best hockey memories. Being a flyer fan from Toronto it really doesn't get much better than this

I applaud Matthews and his agents for that deal. In my opinion, an absolute fleece of the leafs and dubas. They got their money now, but they also got their freedom.

The overestimation of the cap limit might have been Fletcher’s biggest error to date.

If McDavid was making $20M, how would they be able to putba competitive team on the ice and be cap compliant?

Exactly, it's impossible with a hard cap. Other leagues have softer caps, luxury taxes. nba has the larry bird exemption rule.

There is no debate that McDavid is worth more to the NHL / the Oilers than 12.5 million. His value in terms of dollars signs and being the face of the league far exceeds that number.

Actually, McDavid's salary this season is 15M

Explain to me what the luxury tax in baseball and the Bird exemption in the NBA does in terms of the revenue split between the players and the team owners?

So maybe he wants to win a Cup while being paid $12.5M per instead of no Cup at $20M. Also, he likely makes more in promotions than he does from the Oilers.

What do you think that would take. Odviously the cap is not an issue and we wouldn’t want to over pay. I was thinking two 3rd rounders, laberge die to his offense and vorobyev to replace his play making. Hurts our depth a little but they get a future sniper and a great 3 rd line center. Kill penalties. I don’t know. Think that is too much.
