That's why dubas is da best.

Whenever you have the choice between skeji and a 1st, you choose neither.

My fear is that he does nothing to address what is the real problem and the team looks the same again next season.

At that point, I think he has failed.

Didn't their decline start before all of their good players got traded away? Could Doughty's abilities be considered part of that decline?
- TheMussel

This is a rough timeline but...

Richards gets caught with drugs, has his contract terminated. Voynov beat the poop out of his wife, got suspended for years. Sutter got fired. Quick got hurt multiple times and has never been the same since. Carter fell off a cliff as most goal scorers do at 30. Brown also fell off a cliff as most power forwards do at 30. Kovalchuk got signed and busted. Muzzin got traded, among many other secondary parts.

If the team was exactly the same as it was 5 years ago but Doughty was the only one sucking the bag, you might have a point. But the fact that the team has been in a downward spiral for years suggests that the team itself imploded and created the mess that Doughty is currently stuck in.

I choose Marleau.
- DrunkSkunk

Agreed.

We should have just sent the 1st to carolina and kept marleau.

IF, Marner is the real problem with the team, then sure.

He isn't though.

It is pretty sad that he only got like 500.00 I hope Carolina finds some way to compensate him more fairly.

I guess the experience is pretty damn good compensation.

They did.... the proceeds of the tee shirt sales with his name and No. are being split between him and some kidney foundation.... I’m not sure what the split is, but that’s what’s happening.

Barrie? Nylander?

The embarsement of marner wearing an A as if anyone could respect him?

Andersen, the one goalie in ~14 years (that lou found) that can handle this market?

I'm not really making a point. Though I find it odd that it is certain that doughty is impervious to decline and is a good value add for the Leafs.

Since when do GMs pick alternate captains? Is that a thing nowadays?

No way it was babs decision.

Pretty sure he thinks hockeybuzz is his 10+ year long interview for leafs GM. If you look at it that way... He's got to be killing it.

I'm not saying Doughty is impervious to decline. I'm saying his "decline" is overstated based on history and his particular set of skills for at least the next 4-5 years which happens to perfectly line up with the Leafs window of opportunity.

He's a good value add if they retain salary but there's nobody else out there realistically available who fits the bill. Can you think of any?

Unless we go down the path of trading Nylander for a 18 year old top prospect and living and dying by that prospect being a boom or a bust. To me, that's the much more dangerous scenario and doesn't line up with the Leafs soon to be 4 year window of opportunity.

No idea what the problem is with Marner or if he is the problem.

Surprised so many people are jumping on him. Tavares was much better last year with Marner, and Matthews season picked up this year when he was paired with Marner.

He hasn't played well lately, but you cant just give up on him that fast.
