Just heard Rutherford on the radio. Basically confirmed my worst thoughts. He "could see" Sheary reunited with Sid on the top line. Lord help us.
I'm sure the Capitals fully endorse this idea. - madmike71
Yeah... considering the Caps are 0-2 in the playoffs against the Pens with Sheary on the roster....
If not Sheary it'll be Simon.... i'll take the guy who can finish more than 2% of the time. |

Since you missed the point of that would be when everyones healthy... which I thought was obvious... you missed that ZAR and Guentzel are injured as well

Rodrigues is a RFA already making 2M, he's probably in the same range as Kahun.
The Pens could have afforded Kahun without a problem, but perhaps they decided they didn't. Perhaps they'll give that money to Sheary or Rodrigues. Or let both walk. Who knows, I'm just not sure they needed this move. - Tojo.
Except Rodrigues is a marginal NHL player. He's like a poor man's Tanev. Kahun, on the other hand, is a legit 40+ point producer. Then there's Sheary. Just ugh.
This was a bizarro world trade. The team with Cup aspirations is supposed to get the best player in the deal. JR thinks he's a clever bargain bin shopper but he should just stick to trying to obtain top 6/top 4 players. |

Are you sure? Sheary has 2 goals in his last 34 playoff games. |

Yeah, I was going to say that he only played two games against the Caps because all it took was one moderate open ice check from Wilson and Sheary was deer-in-the-headlights afterward and had to be healthy scratched for the rest of the series. |

I like Kahun better than Sheary and Rodrigues seems like just another guy. So from that sense I don't like this deal. |

He did score some big time timely ones in the 2016 run though. I like the lil bugger but do think Kahun is better ...but he's not as fast. |

With any trades it's wait and see, really....Iook at the Marino trade sure hahah....I'm gonna wait and see how Lil Rody Piper looks with this team, this teams attitude and system. If he turns out to be effective then F yes this trade was great. Kahun has never played a playoff game and looks to be a bit busted up. |

Not to sound dramatic, but this is a nightmare trade deadline day for me.
On a day when
Vatanen gets traded within the division for a couple of average prospects and a 4th
Trocheck gets traded within the conference for roster players and prospects
Gustafsson goes for a 3rd
Ennis goes for a 5th
We get:
A cooked Marleau for a 3rd
A healthy scratch playoff flunky
A marginal NHL player
Oh, and we gave up on a young 40+ point producer with team control.
Bare minimum, we could have kept Kahun and gotten Gustafsson and Ennis for a 2nd and 4th.
Just forward-wise, I'll take Kahun, Ennis, 3rd over Marleau, Sheary, Rodrigues, 4th. All day every day. Just horrendous.
I'll also take Gustafsson for a 2nd + healthy scratch JJ any day of the week.
We are actually worse than when we started today and had to give up 3rd to boot. |

Definitely, and I like the Marleau addition. I think he's gonna give it his all he doesn't have a cup this reminds of the Guerin trade. I know Guerin had a cup already but younger it haha. |

Rodriguez is very fast but from a skill perspective it just seemed like the puck always dribbled off his stick or juuuuust missed the open corner. Also tended to turn pucks over in his own zone.
Sheary just didn’t make a poopty team any better. And yeah. He got knocked off the puck a lot like you guys already know. |

After the Caps finally beat us in 18, I'll never forget Niskanen telling the story of Trotz pre-series comments. Trotz basically said......(paraphrasing) "The reason you're always losing them is because you're letting little guys like Rust and Sheary beat you". They knocked Sheary around like a child. I remember thinking, Sheary could play the entire 60 minutes (if humanly possible) and he's not scoring a single goal against this team. He never got within 15 feet of the net.
Anyway.... I'll add this... I kind of got the feeling the Pens weren't thrilled with Kahun's personality. I don't remember his exact comments, but he kind of intimated "character" might have been involved in the decision. |

Honestly he needs to play with Geno because he's not so much grind down low and cycle, he likes to make plays and find an open guy (Sheary). If Sheary plays with Sid he's not gonna be able to grind. Definitely think Shears should be with Geno and Rust and I would put Marleau with Sid and Zucker. |

What do you think of my idea above?
Zuck-Sid-Mars
Shear-Geno-Rust
Simon-McCann-Horny
Geno likes having a guy that gets open to just score instead of cycling like Sid. This could be our best setup. |

If they were open to moving Kahun, they should had called the Panthers and tried to get Trocheck. Kahun/Simon is a better offer than Haula/Wallmark, especially since Haula is a UFA. His cap could had worked by moving Hornqvist or Bjugstad in the off-season. That’s a player who would fit the system |

I think it must have been something regarding Kahun for us to get rid of him like this. Chicago made a legit trade in which they were hoping to get a good young 2LD on a good contract. This trade was for spare parts. Poor asset management. They could have gotten more for Kahun or used him in a bigger trade for a legit top 6 forward.
So how much of these trades had Sully's input? He clearly wasn't pleased with Sheary the first time around. |

As much as anything, the team that wins the cup has to stay healthy. Whether or not you like moving on Kahun, the Pens got two players back and can upgrade that 4th line. Assuming ZAR and Bjgsy come back, they now have above replacement value depth to put out there when someone goes down. |

I definitely liked Kahun better than Sheary, but it's not like they're worlds apart. I don't hate the trade, I just don't get it. I'm assuming Evan was to replace ZAR in the short term.
I wouldn't be shocked to see Marleau see time with Sid on the RW since he's able to play his off-sing. |

There was a lot more going on in that series than just that. Malkin was banged up and only had 2 5v5 points in that playoff run. The Pens were relying on Brassard to actually carry a line and boy did that bite us in the ass. I think our forecheck is something that can absolutely wreak havoc against the caps the season. Adding some speedy players who can play that game is important. The caps are built to be physical, there were no additions we could make that would even that up. Play to your strengths. |

Oh, right. Yes, I freely admit to be a spoiled fan, but I just hate to see spending assets on scraps while the competition is getting legit players. At least we have the Zucker trade, but today was a big step backward, IMO. Not only do I think we got worse, but the competition got better. |

I've posted my thoughts on lines already and it has Marleau with Sid on the RW. It can definitely work. Give Geno Sheary and Rust and McCann, Simon and Horny. |
