Penguin will go as far as the goalchie takes you. If your goalchie out duels the other guy's, you win. Everything else is even steven. Between Tampa, Boston, Caps and Penguin... It'll be the goalchie deciding it. I'd say Flyers too, but they may not have the guidance to do it if Hart isn't playing like an all-star.

Crosby and Malkin have never had 2 "top 6 wingers each" ever....

Imo the only top 6 wingers Sid has ever had were Hossa and Guentzel.... Dupuis and Kunitz were never top 6 "talents" imo..... Crosby made them look like they were top 6.

To paraphrase Miracle.... "You don't need the best players... you need the right players".... GMJR got the right players even if they aren't all sexy games

- Yonk1216

I just don’t agree about Kunitz. I think he was top 6 talent. Good hockey IQ too.

Well it was 3 years with Guentzel and Kessel. Those were definitely 2 top 6 bonafide wingers. But for the most part you're absolutely right.

Edit: Kunitz/Neal was good too.

I think I am settling in on the moves. I liked Kahun’s game and wish him well but I think the key ingredient to anything moving forward is heath of Dumo and Marino.

Absolutely. Those are the two biggest additions by far. And now we actually have 4 lines.

Label Dupuis and Kunitz however you want, but Sheary and 40.5 year old Marleau, who top out as 3rd liners, make them look elite.

I'm pretty annoyed. JR is wasting not one but TWO generational talents with these nonsense bit player trades.

The JJ signing sucked, but I didn't realize just how bad it was going to suck at the time. I wasn't as up in arms as some about the Reaves trade, but considering that Sully didn't want to play him, that was dumb and wasteful. He overpaid for Tanev, but whatever. Brassard was either bad luck or bad planning or both. The other minor trades like Hags for Pearson for Guds for nothing I liked all of them. Dumpster diving for Hunwick was dumb but not terrible.

As far as actual trades, I can't think of worse of the top of my head. It sucked losing Cole and a 1st for Brassard but I liked the idea of a 2C talent playing 3C and we really needed a 3C after losing Bonino.

Again, it's not just the trade, but the opportunity cost. It will get harder and harder to win the Cup as the window progresses, so fiddling around with bit players while the competition is scooping up legit talent is annoying as hell.

I think the Reaves trade was pretty bad. If he could skate and play I would love him on the team. But to give up Sundquist and a first was a lot. And Klim Kostin is tracking basically to be another Reaves for St. Louis lol. That trade and jj were upsetting to me.

Chill man. You’ll be fine when you see Sheary clicking in Pittsburgh. I hate the fact he falls a lot but he’s a smart player too. He’s close to Sullivan so this has to play a factor on this trade.

Rodrigues seems like a tweener to me. Has some skill but something is missing from his game. We’ll see.

Basically I think Rutherford's hand was forced with Kahun. He was in a situation where he did not think he would be able to match any offers this offseason so essentially Kahun was a de facto UFA. If Kahun was not injured he might have let him at least play out the season but because he was injured, he traded him to a team who probably can resign him for a somewhat reliable winger who worked well for the team at times in the past.
- PghPens668771

I think you might be onto to something. Not from an offer sheet standpoint, but just not having enough cap to sign all RFAs (McCann, Simon, Riikola, Jarry/Murray) and/or different priorities. And as you say, the injury might have been a factor, too, but it doesn't seem that serious.

As far as the Metro goes I’d probably rank the deadline teams as

1. Carolina (Trochek, Skjei, and Vatanen is a pretty insane haul of good players regardless of what they paid and I think it was all pretty fair)

2A. Pens (Marleau and Kovalchuk are probably washes with an edge to Kovi and the Zucker trade outweighs Dillon and the unforced error of the Kahun trade IMO)

2B. Caps (they made good moves and weren’t as desperate to add pieces as the Pens to begin with. Argument can be made they had every bit as good a deadline as Pitt.)

4. Rangers (The decision to not trade Kreider and ink him to that contract will be good. If anything he’s appreciated in value if they want to revisit a trade later on. Skjei for a first is solid for a rebuilding team)

5. Jersey (solid return for an injured player and getting anything for the corpse of Simmonds is a ok)

6. Islanders (overpaid for an impact player, but got an impact player nonetheless. The contract they gave him is probably suspect, but oh well. They’ll be happy that Parise trade didn’t go through as time moves on)

7. Flyers and CBus tied. Columbus did nothing and the Flyers May as well have done nothing.

- Victoro311

I think is a pretty good analysis.

Yesterday broke the record for number of trades on TDL. Pretty crazy when you consider all the other deals in the few weeks leading up to it. That kind of activity probably makes it harder to get certain guys you might be originally looking for.

Exactly, there was tons of activity, he could have been working on a deal and poof guy he was thinking about going somewhere else already.

So after getting a morning workout and some breakfast in with my friend who works inside the organization and a few other organization people. They said JR was looking at bigger trades, but wasn't able to make them due to salary restrictions (they wouldn't go into detail). They believe the Sheary trade was to see if we can catch lightning in a bottle twice and win a cup. If not he is a UFA this offseason so they save some money. They told me JR and a few others are very high on Evan Rodrigues and they feel he could be a solid addition. Before Buffalo the organization as a whole took a step back in overall play/production. Rodrigues was a bright spot for them he is also a right handed shot which we were looking for. I overall get a feeling that this offseason they are going to be making a deal for a top 6 winger. I think we had a solid deadline. We may have landed a long term bottom six option who can play up and down the lineup. We also landed Zucker who will solidify himself as one winger with Crosby (with the potential to get someone else this offseason). He still kept most of our assets and top prospects in the system and we also kept our 3rd round pick this year.

They did not go into detail about Kahun, but they said he was a player who showed flashes of being great, but then would go games without even being noticed. He wasn't very teachable to improve his skills (he wouldn't listen).

Can someone explain Rodrigues to me? I know nothing about him. I've heard he's a skill guy... I've heard he's good defensively ...I've heard he's a defensive liability.... is he better at center or wing?

When healthy, he's be a scratch right? From what I can tell he wouldnt play over Bjug, Blueger or ZAR, right?

What was weird to me was with all that activity, the Central was very quiet. Avs in particular sat on a ton of cap space. Winning that division seems like as a good a path as any to get to the Finals.

What I get from everything Ive read is that he's fast AF, can play any forward position and is a right shot. It seems he didnt give his all with the Sabres every night but when he did was effective. I have a feeling a change of scenery might do this guy good...we'll see
