I have been following Rafferty for a few years and thought he might get some time this season. I am not sure if they are concerned about his defensive ability, as Brisebois appears to be the defensive rock on that pairing.
Although his point totals are there, i dont think his skating/edge work is up to par.
I am getting the feeling he may be another McEneny,
Also, Benning has been a Brisebois guy for a long time. I think he gets his chance, next season. - Reubenkincade
Brisbois is an AHLer. Rafferty likely as well but based off of his play this year, he'll get a chance.
My point with the ELC/ cheaper contracts is that they will likely need a few of them in the lineup to be compliant.
Benn's 2M to replace Tanev's 5M
Rafferty's 700k to replace Stetcher's 2.5M

Benn can’t even make 7th man let alone fill Tanevs role |

If you weren't so high like your pal you could understand the Canucks are better built then the Oilers for the play offs. For example, they have bigger skilled forwards that can retrieve pucks and play along the wall.
Or does what you and your pal put as not a real fan mean you are an Oiler fan not a Canuck one. Would explain a lot you guys being being closeted never having something positive and fair balanced to post. |

Not often i agree with Marwood, but a first and a second is solid. You’ve got at least one NHLer, in all likelyhood, and a potential second. Both of which could end up better than Pageau. The isles have a stocked prospect pool, so I don’t hate the trade for either team. - neem55
Patrick White and Alexander Daigle are useless...Brent Krahn and Kyle Beach, Nikita Filatov and Scott Glennie, Gudbranson and Yakupov...all these guys were 1st round picks and easily justified to trade.
Just another way to look at it. |

Ya, I got what your point was, I just dont see Benning wanting to downgrade his defense, it is already only an average group.
I feel he will be looking at all options, including buyouts of players with 1 year remaining, like Sutter, Baertschi etc and/or trades involving a pick or prospects...unfortunately. |

It's not ideal but they'll likely need to make some tough decisions. Benning said as much in his post TDL presser.
Is Toffoli and Benn better than Tanev and Benn?
Markstrom and Benn better than Tanev and Demko/UFA bargain Bin?

True. I love the value, it’s a strong draft and you didn’t re-sign the guy. The type of move i wanted the Canucks to make a little earlier. |

There were so many god awful draft picks by Vancouver back before Benning and all the criticism he gets is surprising when you look back at the crap that was before him |

Your point is probably part of the plan when JB announced he's got 7 prospects making the NHL in next couple seasons.
Though at the same time Canucks probably looking into more immediate options this summer offloading contracts.
If any of the above fail they will be in cap hell where they would have to move a key roster piece. |

I am not disagreeing but Canucks have had 7 first round drafted players in the last 20 years play 82 games for the club . Hughes will make 8
Out of 22 players selected in the first round for Canucks 8 players have played 82 games for Canucks |

I think it will be a number of things that will need to occur including letting some guys walk and filling from within. Benning has been preaching this team has depth ready to play, I think he believes it.
Even with Ferland on LTI, Sutter and Baertschi bought out, they only manage to save about 5.5M I think. It helps but 25M still goes pretty quick if your spending 15-18M on 3 guys and need to sign 10.
Obviously they'll be compliant but its going to hurt the team in some way or another. |

3 Calder finalists in a row. Gaudette, Zacmac, Lind, JV, Demko, Stech... created a lot of assets. I think Woo, Juolevi, Podz and Hogg are both high likelyhood guys as well. All GMs are going to hit and miss, but his track record is outstanding right now. |

Cap problems . Maybe they will play with only 16 man roster. - VANTEL
That way they could guarantee the free agents they do sign that they'd get lots of icetime. Could be a strong selling point.
I better put this in here. |

Sutter could get traded with only a year left on his contract. Plus they probably have a plan to get rid of LE's contract too. |
