Up until this week Freddy's numbers in 2020 were virtually identical to Hutchinson's season numbers over the same number of games.
He has not improved that much, so, basically since 2020, he has been Hutchinson.
I don't deny that he is a better goalie than Hutchinson, but to suggest he is fine and is not part of the problem (as some people have done) is pretty dumb. - Aetherial
Yup bang on.
But apparently it’s all defensive play. People like Garnie and UG have issues with finding blame.
The reality is the D or Freddy haven’t helped out eachother. They have both been bad.
Freddy is a lot better than his play and that’s what is so frustrating. You know how much better he can be. |

l found last nights game really curious... the 3rd goal in particular seemed like Andersen was "comatose"... just asleep. After that... he appeared a little unsure of himself for a bit...
but was really solid after that...
I wonder if that "neck-thing" he had... maybe he came back too soon - BorjeFan4Ever
Funny thing after that 3rd goal, my brother text me saying Keefe should pull Andersen, because the Leafs are playing well but he's not.
I said, that would be too easy for Keefe to blame it on Freddy. Andersen will bounce back and the players will figure this out |

critiquing Freddie shouldn't be off limits... but the 'dangerous' aspect is that it tends to let the team defense off the hook.
there are far too many nights when Freddie and defense are just left to their own devices...
they weren't last night, the forwards did their jobs and the results are pretty obvious. |

The major problem people have is people assuming this.
No one is excusing defensive play. Someone will critique Freddy and people will jump all over the D.
A goalie can play bad at the same time as the D. |

Well there is one big damn difference.
Bernie is playing in Detroit and isn’t expected to win.
Andersen is under a microscope in Toronto and is expected to win.
The difference in pressure is massive.
There’s the human element to consider here as well. These guys aren’t machines. - Dozzer
He's been in Toronto for four years and has been expected to win for that entire duration.
I feel the need to clarify this when I'm criticizing Andersen: I think he's a very a good goalie. I think he can be our very good goalie.
I also think something is wrong this year. Are teams figuring him out? You remember how later in CuJo's years here he had that stupid lean away from the goalpost when he was anticipating a cross-ice pass, and teams would eat him up short-side high? Does Andersen have something going on?
One thing he's doing a lot of this year is putting himself out of position on his first save. He isn't controlling the rebound but he's also on his stomach or really out of position for a rebound - which is not something I was used to him doing a lot of in previous years.

if Keefe had pulled Andersen last night... that may have been "it" for Andersen in Toronto...would have destroyed his currently "fragile" confidence.
There is one thing that the Leafs do have to start doing.. even if it costs them the odd penality. They do need to protect Freddie more vigorously. I think Spezza did at one point last night... even though the intrusion by the Panther's player wasn't that bad... it was the "right" thing to do. Judging by Freddie's reaction to Spezza.. he wants that. |

completely different teams playing different styles.
freddy wins games.
he has proven to be great at times and struggled at times. consistent with most goalies. - Tumbleweed
If you gave Bernier this offense, he'd probably be winning games, too. If you put this year's Andersen in Detroit's net, do you think they'd be winning games?
The point isn't that Andersen sucks. Toronto's defense is more than questionable, and we all know that (except probably Roger), but our defense has ALWAYS been more than questionable and Andersen has always been there to be a wall to protect that crappy defense from cracking.
It's really noticeable when he isn't that wall.
Nothing is intended to excuse our poor team defense. It is, however, intended to shed light on the fact that Andersen has been, can be, and should be better. |

Ive been wondering if he’s seeing the ice as well this year. He seems a little bit more hesitant... he doesn’t seem to be challenging the shooter as much... I’ve been wondering if playing behind an injury riddled defense this year has him putting too much pressure on himself and he’s not letting himself relax. This might all just be in his head.

By the way, I fully agree with this. I would have pulled him. My TV knows I wanted them to.
But leaving him in and letting him battle through and play really well in the third could be a good thing. He definitely did the job in the third when he had to. |
