I wonder if they could work Hickey into the deal to make the money work a little better for them. Jets would essentially get two NHL defenseman and Bellows. Isles would get Ehlers and a little breathing room to maybe sign Greene cheap for a year to afford Dobson the time to develop at a reasonable pace in the minors.
Now I'm waiting for the inevitable Jets fan to show up and tell me how dumb I am. Ehlers is a criminally underrated player though, so I expect that no Jets fan is dying to move him. Certainly not expecting that deal to happen. - eichiefs9
I doubt even Winnipeg is desperate enough to grab Hickey.
Buy him out perhaps? |

Probably not and maybe. Would save them 625k next year and 1.875 the following season but then they'd carry a dead-money cap hit of 625k for the following two years. Not crippling by any means, but who knows if that's in the budget for them.
The first year of the dead-money on that buyout would be when Clutterbuck/Komarov/Johnston/Boychuk/Leddy all come off the books, so they'll certainly be looking at some more breathing room by then. That's $19M freed up. |

Exactly why the Islanders should part ways with him. He’s too good for us. Ladd too. |

But how much of that will have to be spent internally? 🤔 |

Not sure if we should give whatever teams we trade them to that kind of advantage? |

Yeah for sure, just saying that the fact that a potential Hickey buyout would cost them 625k in cap space for two seasons (starting in 2022-23) might make it more of an option since they'll have $19M worth of contracts coming off the books that year. The hope, at least for me, is that they'll have drafted intelligently enough those lesser roles (Clutter/Komarov/Boychuk/Johnston) can be filled by younger/cheaper players. |

Fortunately for the organization, those players shouldn’t be awfully hard to replace (exception arguably being Boychuk). |

At this point I don't think present-day Boychuk is a particularly tough guy to replace. He's been pretty bad this season. He's slow as dirt. No doubt he's a leader and a great locker room guy, which is obviously worth something, but his play is not great and it's probably not going to get better over the next two years. |

He hasn’t been great lately but I thought he was pretty good up till a month and a half ago. With that said that goes for the rest of the team also for the most part besides Pulock and Toews who had a bad stretch and is playing pretty great now. I get it he’s getting old and is expensive so Chiefs wants to put him out to pasture. Would be nice to have more depth and play him in a more limited role in the meantime... |

Wont get a return for boychuk but he hasn't been terrible either. He gives it all hes got and gotta believe the guys live him in that room and unlike other high character guys he can still play but should be a bottom 6 guy now. Leaves it all out there and I think hes surpassed where we thought he would be at this point when he was resigned |

I'm assuming you mean as a 7th defenseman, but he's pretty much already being used in a limited role. He's averaging about 2 1/2 minutes less than every defenseman not named Dobson. NHL website has Greene playing less average TOI per game, but I think that's largely because he "played a game" against the Rangers but only took maybe two or three shifts and that's dragging his average down.
No complaints, I just don't think Boychuk is a particularly "good" defenseman any more. He's old, it happens. |
