It could make sense though. If the team buys him out, the hit remains on the cap for two years. You trade him retained, it's still only next year. You have to lock up Lindgren, Chytil, Buch, and Shesty after next season. You better start preparing for the future now.

Rangers will have another 10 million free from Staal and Smith. Not really worried about the cap after next season.

I’m not really worried about a Chytil or Lindgren contract. How much are they going to cost? Can’t see either of them getting over 3mil, barring a monster season next year.

It all adds up in the end. Shesty is obviously the big one. The top priority should be signing him to a max contract, even if it costs us 5-6 million (or more).

It depends what the asset is honestly. I wouldn't give up a 1st or 2nd, but giving up a mid asset to make sure we have extra room to lock up guys is worth it for sure.

I know we are counting on this treasure trove of cap space. I'm not going to argue that we will be crunched, but I'm not sure this treasure trove is going to go quite as far as we think. I've mentioned the 4 we have to lock up after next year, and Shesty could cost a pretty penny. How much in two years do we think Fox will cost to lock up? What if Kakko breaks out next year? If Hank won't retire or waive his NMC, I'm all for just sitting on him for a year instead of buying him out unless you have a specific target you want to acquire this offseason.

Honestly that is a great problem to have. If these young players eventually do show their promise the Rangers will figure out a way to pay them or trade them for a big haul. Not every player can be signed long term, its part of the fun of playing NHL GM

I don't want to seem like i'm being overly pessimistic. The truth of the matter though, is the team has an exciting young core and a cap situation that could set us up to be cup contenders on a yearly basis. If we are smart, we can keep this all together.

Winning a cup is extremely hard in this league. The Lightning dynasty that was supposed to happen may go cupless. I really do think if we play the cap game smart we could set ourselves up for a potential dynasty. Jim has been a fan longer than me, but this is probably the best young core in my watching days the team has ever had, and the team added one of the best players in the league in Panarin long term. I really think we win the cup in the next few seasons.

I really think to some extent we can sign everyone. That's the thing. Shesty is probably the only guy coming up that's really going to put our balls in a vice so to speak. Fox may do so for a lesser extent, but most everyone else that's a part of this won't even gain arbitration rights for the better part of a decade. We obviously want Kakko to be a superstar, but his "down" rookie year might wind up saving us money long term.

the only way I'd accept the Rangers giving up an asset to trade Lundqvist is if the receiving team takes his entire cap hit.

I feel like only a team that needs to hit the cap floor would consider it, and Hank would never waive to go to a bottom dweller

it's just like a never ending problem with no perfect solution

of course another solution will be to trade Georgiev, let Hank backup Igor next year and just let Hank finish this damn thing out

Yea that is the biggest problem. There is no solution that will make everyone happy

Buy him out - He should have been playing to increase his trade value

Retires - Rangers treated him unfarily, he deserved better

Trade him - Why did the Rangers give him a NMC NTC, the Rangers got nothing back in value and are still eating some salary!!!!

Keep Him - Georgiev is so much better, why did we keep Hank over him!!

I don't see the Rangers giving up an asset to trade Henrik with anything retained. Gorton has been clear about his views on the expansion draft that they will lose a good player but he refuses to lose a player and an asset.

My guess is they tell Henrik that he is the #3 next season. He will concede and waive his NMC. They will shop to see if anyone wants him for future considerations and if no one bites Henrik retires after that $1M is paid out

Seems like a fairly pragmatic solution that will probably not be overly broadcast by either side.
