It would be hard to let Marky walk after he finally is reaching his potential and is even in Vezina discussions.
But.
I agree, longer term contract will bite us in the azz.
I don't think it'd be a 'disaster' to let him walk.
I think we have a couple good kids in the pipeline and are plenty of FA options available to provide some stability if it comes to that.
If it was sign Tofoli and a UFA goalie short term (say Matt Murray, Robin Lehner, Aaron Dell) or be forced to sign Markstrom longterm, i'd go with the former. - dbot
He's obviously masking a lot of deficiencies in the lineup, good bad or indifferent, but I think signing him longer term would be just as big of a disaster. - LeftCoaster
I can't see him demanding a contract so ridiculous that it ties the organizations hands, or that is unmovable a year or 2 from now. Why not just sign him for what he's worth and move him at the TDL next year if Demko looks ready? Seems like it'd be better than letting him walk for nothing while he's playing like a top 10 goalie.

Not that you're suggesting this but he's not dumb, him and his agent or going to milk his year to the very last drop as this will probably be his last contract and you know damn well there's a team out there looking for solid goaltending who'll overpay him in both dollar and term.

I guess I just value true starting goalies higher? Demko is not ready to be a starter and it's not guaranteed that Dipietro will turn into anything. You're going to pay a premium for a starting goalie in FA, probably a similar cap hit to Marky, even if it's short term. I don't see how that's a better option.
If you're concerned about signing Toffoli, I think you should be looking somewhere other than goaltending to save money.
And of course, this entire conversation is depandant on what Marky is going to ask for in an extension, which none of us know.
But Toffoli gets top line minutes and he barely produces more than JV who plays almost entirely in the bottom six minutes, he played with Kopitar almost exclusively before he came to Vancouver, plus, his legs are dead, the game is about speed and he has none. - LeftCoaster
My problem is I don't see Jake as a top 6 guy. You said it yourself he does not have the hockey smarts.
I like the kid but I have a lot of doubts about him. He pretty well is your only chance also to recoup a first.

It definitely is tough to say when we don't know the ask. Maybe I'm more optimistic about how much he likes Van

That's the concern for sure. No matter what, you have to make sure he is moveable when you sign him. - NorthNuck
I think Canucks budgeted 4.5 for Markstrom but now that Markstrom has finally turned the corner he wants more. I don't think they are willing to go much more. I think 6 by 4 would be absolute tops.
I cut some slack to people naming things 100+ years ago, they weren't the smartest group
On a more serious note, I'm fine with Canucks, but if you want to relate the Canadiens and Canucks, one stuck firm with their logo/brand and the other did not. We wouldn't be having this discussion if they didn't have a history of changing their logo every 10 years - WhiteLie
I am sort of curious to the general feeling here about Marky Toffoli and Tanev .
What do people think they will get and how many years. - VANTEL
I think re-signing all those guys, for more money than they make now, doesnât accomplish the âget betterâ mantra. I wouldnât want to go longer than a couple years on any of those contracts.
Jersey has three firsts including our first. - VANTEL
If we miss the playoffs they only have 2 firsts I think if we make it this year and give up our first, we have a good opportunity to move on from JM and let Demko learn the Starter roll the way JM did. If we tank we get a high pick. I also think that our forward group is the best it has been since the 2012 season and our defensive group is improving. Sutter will likely have small value, but probably won't cost an asset to move. Same with Benn. If we move those two we can let SB ride out his contract in Utica, and the LE situation won't matter for one more season.
