Well... we don’t know the details... he may have wanted a larger salary for the additional time taken up of the years he’s in his prime. Dubas might have done 5 years to keep the cap hit down.

the truth is, Matthews is a center and has more responsibilities than a winger would - and his compete level has increased quite significantly in the last 15 games or so as the Leafs try to dig deeper and get into the post season.

Matthews has great numbers in all categories - greater than both Ovi and Pastr. So people can say this and that about Matthews but the truth is he's a beast and is a 5 on 5 scoring machine and has been since he joined the league.

not saying either pastrnak or ovi are bad goal scorers, just that Matthews scores and hits, blocks, steals the puck and works hard up and down the ice. Center responsibilities and improving his game.

Except he doesn’t call it a mistake. He said they’ve acknowledged the need to improve it and that there was no way to do so at the deadline and that’s why they stood pat.
