Although I recall there being extreme concerns with SARS long ago, I don't recall the mass hysteria, cancelled sporting events, that we're seeing with today's lethal Corona virus. Is it simply due to media? - LeftCoaster
Do you remember when you didn't have to lock your doors or have security systems? The simpler times without media attention to serial killers, robberies etc. Well news began to focus on these dangers and fear took over. Ignorance can be blissful right?
Now with social media at such heights, world wide, there is nothing that doesn't get covered to mass levels. Hysteria is common place be it cautionary or reactionary.
Does it mean we have to live in plastic bubbles so nothing affects us or can we just accept that there are dangers in this world but life must go on. Its just hard to know what is precautionary versus reactionary in this spot light world. Hockey was one good escape we'll have to do without for now. |

It does spread at an unbelievable rate but it is in fact far less dangerous. - LeftCoaster
low mortality rate x high infection rate = lots of deaths.
we should ask our parents if they're comfortable with a 3-7% death rate. |

Numbers I read this morning are 0.7% to 3.4%, depending on location, ie: ground zero, which is far less than SARS but at a much higher infection rate. It's the weak who are always most vulnerable, people with existing respiratory illnesses and the elderly.
80% of cases will simply feel flu like symptoms. |

I wonder how they will work playoffs whenever they come back. Have all teams play up to 71 games, or finish the full 82?
This could be good for Van as Marky now has time to get healthy. - NorthNuck
Now that he is on LTIR doesn't he have to stay out 10 Games? |

i'm not disagreeing. i'm not worried about for myself per se. even if i get it, i'll be fine.
lots of people will be asymptomatic and it'll pass without them even knowing. it really isn't that dangerous.
...except for the vulnerable. that's why i'm worried. i've got a parent who is 70 and even at your low percentages, that worries me. that death rate is huge for a cold/flu type situation especially when we know that it spreads as fast.
so the precautions that i think everyone should take aren't necessarily for them (or ourselves), it's ensuring that it doesn't become widespread and hit the vulnerable. |

No...but I remember Brent Ashton took a wrist shot one time that rang off the cross bar and thought to myself, "I can't even shoot a slapper that hard" |

I'd be willing to wager that a Lingerie Pole Vaulting League would get higher ratings than the darts or snooker coverage that TSN runs now. |
