Again I think it is noble that they are being proactive . Now on the way home Bo wife opens the front door to his condo that was just touched by the infected mailman .
Jake walks into a bar and is talking to an infected female.
Hockey players children still go to school and they come home with it.
Unless there is a city lock down the athletes and public still have as much chance as catching the virus - VANTEL
And that's the whole point: they don't want to wait until a player/team associated individual tests positive.
And with the amount of travelling and the sheer number of people that professional athletes come into to contact with (let alone how close they come to each other in games), their probability of exposure goes up.
The point is that there are 800+ players in the league. If one tests positive, that team will not be allowed to play. If one team can't play, the whole league can't play. It's that simple.
If you're willing to roll the dice and take the risks: what happens if a player tests positive in the playoffs?
The league should want to minimize the chance of a forced stoppage. They should be trying to make alternate arrangements to complete the season. Crossing their fingers and hoping for the best seems like a recipe for disaster. |

It is. We just got instructions this AM from the municipality on precautions. It's moving along now which is good. We are doing what we can to keep the public informed and the facilities safe. But I wouldn't be shocked if there is a 14-28 day lock down of some rec facilities in larger areas especially if a local tests positive. |

ive played over 12 years and there is no way my slap shot is even close to 93 MPH. My slapshot is average at best amongst my team mates, but i still very much doubt you guys are hitting that number. |

So they shut down the leagues but leave mall,s food courts , Schools (all levels) movie theaters , medical clinics , condos, public transport and businesses open .
I guess the leagues can say they did their part but did it make a big difference?
I do treat this very serious but I don't think you can control it.

The bottom line is that the league is and should be protecting their own interest (financial and otherwise.)
They will lose a lot more if and when they are forced to shut down rather than shut down voluntarily with a plan to restart. They need to have tentative plans for building availability etc. That will take a lot of planning. The longer they wait, the harder it will be (buildings, tv etc.) If they wait until a player tests positive, they'll have squandered time. If it happens during the playoffs, that would be a catastrophic disaster for the league (not society haha.)
For them, it really is a financial decision (but wrapped up as a medical decision.)
It will save money to shut down and plan for a gradual return.
They're going to lose money either way but a forced stoppage will cost them more money in the long run.

Played once this winter and had to officially retire my slap shot. Was skating well, feeling good, on the right wing with a left handed shot, just me and the goalie, so I though I’ll blast it. Hit more ice than puck and by the time it reached the goalie he stopped the puck by stepping on it.
The boys called me Muffin for the rest of the game. |

To me it is not a money thin ( I am not an owner lol)
My point is the WHO has already declared it as Pandemic. I take that as the sh1t has already hit the fan.
You can either go on as normal or close everything down if it is that deadly. Doing a little bit here and a little bit there won't stop the spread . This is beyond sports leagues or actors guilds . This is something governments should now step in on.
I find it really stupid to shut down travel and yet transport those same people you are afraid of on public transit.
The athletes may be protected but what happens when the go to the grocery store? Very same risks

I disagree that it's all or nothing (at least for now.) I'll listen to the doctors' advice on such matters and follow their recommendations.
If we go on as normal, a lot of people will die based off the initial mortality rates.
If we go on as normal, the medical system in North America will be over run.
What is needed (according to professionals) is for the virus to take a longer time to go away. This may seem counter-intuitive but it seems that if it spreads quickly, we'll become Italy and have to lock the country down as you suggest. If it spreads at a slower rate, hospitals will be able to handle the increase in patients. If the hospitals get overrun quickly, it could be go from bad to very bad to catastrophic very quickly.
You think emergency room wait times are bad now? What happens if/when they get overrun by people who are contagious?
I don't think we should have the mentality that "oh well, it's here and there's nothing we can do about it." Listen to the professionals and try to mitigate the dangers. That's the best we can do for now.
That doesn't mean be a crazy survivalist bunker person hording toilet paper but try to follow what the doctors are telling us (social distancing, hand washing etc.)

This is good sound advice. The more info the general public (me) have the better.
My clinic just told me I can register for my appointment on site and wait in the car.
I am sure they have Purell on site after I touch the door handle

I wonder if the big banks with all their profits will tell people not to worry about bills till this thing is sorted out.
And a question for anyone who has medical knowledge, could the mass sanitizer use lead to a stronger more resistant version of the virus? |
