Competition is also an important part of training and development. If you train with and play against better players, you're pushed to improve faster. I'd say that's a disadvantage the stars from yesteryear faced compared to players from today.

There's also the issue of equipment. Skates and sticks were terrible relative to what's available now. Not that Brendan ever used his stick to score.

The best players will always be the ones who are the hungriest for success, usually the greatest players are ones who came from modest circumstances (although not always) and had to overcome a great amount of obstacles to reach the pinnacle of their professions. Having everything handed to you via the best training/equipment/nutrition/etc. tends to make you less hungry for success and therefore may not quite reach full potential.

You hear it a lot in minor/minor pro sports where burnout becomes a problem since you've been groomed for success nearly all your life and realize that once you get to the dance, there's a hill that's super steep that you still have to climb to be the best. It breaks a lot of players that might otherwise have been potential HOFers. There's a reason great scorers in junior end up as 3rd - 4th line grinders, a lot of that success in lower levels don't always translate. Yes, McDavid and Crosby and Draisaitl et. al would still be great, but they are great simply because they're rare type players.

(Generational is word that's vastly overused IMHO)

My larger point would be that as humans progress, of course the "best" will be the latest incarnation. That's because they build on the collective knowledge of the past. So to correct for the lack of knowledge (training, nutrition, tactics etc) a good measure is gap over competition. Also, humans are just getting bigger, stronger, faster.

Put another way, if Brandon Gaunce was born in 1920 with the knowledge and training he has now, every NHL award would be named after him.

The best in absolute terms will always be from the current generation but to compare generations you need to try to equalize their circumstances.

They looked at 100m sprinting times from the past 100 years or whatever. They used to run on basically soft dirt in heavy shoes, and it has been the new tracks, shoes, mechanics that have lead more to runners being faster.

There was a sports science show about this a while ago, and I think someone followed up with it on a TED Talk video... that what we see as human progress is much more technological process.

I think a lot of the big marathons are barring them too because they're such an advantage.

I think we should all refrain from comparing anyone to Bobby Orr. As Canucks fans we could be mocked for jumping the gun comparing him to one of the top 3 to play the game. Coffey, Niedermeyer, and people of that ilk, yes, I feel is a valid comparison. What say you?

Just think bringing Orr into the conversation isn't warranted, whoever brought him up. In any case i haven't seen QH deke through an entire team or anything close in actuality.

Also, not sure why anyone would resort to insults if he's compared to other defencemen who have been great players like coffey, niedermeyer, etc... Seems like a sure fire Calder candidate would get compared to great players...

They were tested to give approximately 4% better performance on average. For professionals that's huge but for regular schmoes you'd be better off training more/better.

That doesn't mean you don't see lots of people wearing them in regular races. Shake my head. But then again, go to beer league and you see guys decked out in 5k worth of gear with the best sticks who are in the lowest level leagues.

My daughters are in grade 4 and 8 and at least we have laptops for them to use for distance learning. What about others who aren't so lucky? Sh*t is getting real, I'm more worried about paying rent and bills while my wife and I are not able to go to work.

There is a nasty rumour going around that they close tomororw. I have 75 beers, 20 bottles of wine, two bottles of mezcal, 3 bottles of patron, 3 bottles of vodka and around ten bottles of scotch. I feel unprepared. Some office are talking about folks working from home for at minimum 90 days

According to a study published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

What's new: Researchers said the virus that causes COVID-19 remains infectious in the air for up to three hours, on copper for up to four hours, on cardboard for up to 24 hours, and on plastic and stainless steel for up to three days.
