So you basically give your self the flu every year. - gerbe75pts
Gerbe... Gerbe... Gerbe..... You know when I was much younger, under 50, I used to speak like you do... Even in my late 40's I used to think it was crazy to get the flu shot. Then I turned 50 and suddenly I realized I had many more years behind me than I did in front of me. And life kind of changes and you get a whole different outlook on life. And you realize that no matter how good of shape you are in that your body is still 50 years old. And your attitudes toward everything including flu shots changes... |

So two points. No doubt I do think this is a killer for the elderly and underlying condition folks, pulmonary issues are extremely serious so I'll get that out before folks say I'm not taking it serious. So if this thing is contained and we get lets call it 25MM cases with 5,000 deaths, will people give credit to this administration for the way they handled it? Absolutely not because it will be the Trump recession dominating the news, you can see this coming from a mile away. Secondly, this cannot happen again in our country so what measures can this country take to make sure of that? Sorry to break it to people but it is literally Trumps agenda items that would help with that, Decouple from China, stronger border security, bring manufacturing back to US, giving small businesses the economic conditions to make them thrive. Let America be America and that's literally what was happening before all this went down. - buffalokb
There is always opportunity in a black cloud, and this could be it.
Certainly, it is alarming that manufacturing of critical health items occurs outside the confines of the US. It simply cannot continue.
Additionally, it was pretty unbelievable that China was able to deploy temporary ICU-type hospital facilities so rapidly to quickly augment the supply side where needed the most. US needs to get on that train very quickly.
I'm sure there are plenty more....THAT should be the focus of the elections coming up. How does this country leverage the learning for the benefit of Americans.
Also, I need Bernie to stay in a while longer...with the market crashing obviously brought on by the far left...he needs to forget about free college and move to free retirement that mirrors the formula used for Congress retirees...Go Bernie! |

Decoupling from China is most likely a good idea, but not because of this. The outbreak in Italy had just as much to do with this as the one in China. This virus has led brought virtually all social and economic activity to a halt, something that we thought only would happen during a nuclear crisis...or the Zombie Apocalypse. |

Not sure I said to abandon efforts anywhere. Everyone right now is doing their part to contain this. I'm taking it serious but I'm pissed off that this could happen to our country. Unfortunately most of our country's population focuses more on panic rather than the will to get through adversity. - buffalokb
Who, the American people? 😂
They most certainly are not.
Many people are still way too cavalier about this. |

How 90% of the actions by these states are constitutional is beyond me. I guess that is what's frustrating me the most...people are throwing away their rights for the warm government safety blanket.
People need to remember that the constitution, and the protections it guarantees, is the law of the land during both peace and war, in good times and in bad. That was true when Lincoln suspended habeous corpus. It was true when FDR seized property during the great depression. It was true when college kids burned their draft cards during Vietnam. And it remains true today.
I hear "better to overreact than underreact" alot. However, the danger with the government overreacting, even if they do so with good intentions, is that it makes people believe that some, but not all, of the restrictions on peoples freedoms are something that people could live with. "Its not that bad letting the government restrict freedom X when they could be restricting freedom Y. Remember how bad not having freedom Y was?!"
Sure the government will eventually ease up restrictions, but every time something like this happens they chip away at our rights just a little bit more in the name of "prevention" going forward (see the patriot act). That is true even if the governing bodies truly harbor no malice or ill-will in retaining post-crisis preventative measures.
More than likely we won't lose our freedom in this country because of a power-hungry leader who switches to an authoritarian state overnight. Rather, it will occur over years, decades, as it is slowly eroded in the name of preventing future tragedies.
I get that the uncertainty of this whole situation worries people to no end. But we cannot allow our fear of the unknown to degrade the very bedrock of what it means to be American and free. - feetontheair22
Boo hoo the GOvt told me to stay home, I am american they cant tell me what to do. Well actually they can, and they have been your entire life.
They are not chipping away at your rights. You've always had freedom of speech, but that does not protect you.
You are free to move to Italy or China to see the GOVT really have a hold on what you do and how you live.
95% of America has zero common sense and cant fend for themselves.
You still have the right to peacful assembly, aka go to a bar or have a parade but.....
The governments Number one authority is to protect its people, and a right to "peaceful assembly" becomes unconstitutional when it puts the public in the path of direct harm, aka the spread of a deadly foreign virus. |

Are they? Are they really?
Some yes.
Some no, until forced to by Govt actions restricting them....even then they freakin complain.
If everybody did in fact do their part earlier, perhaps we would move through this more efficiently.
Some people are complete morons. |

I will say, autism conspiracy theories aside, of all the vaccines out there, the flu vaccine's actual effectiveness is probably the most debated out there. It was never meant to prevent the flu, just to mitigate the symptoms. |
