They should shut the market down before people lose more of their retirements.

And address the current:
Small businesses / daily living

Makes no sense to have Americans sitting home watching their lives wash away.

The entire last 3 plus years gains: gone.

- Boss34

The market thing will correct itself in a few years. The same thing happened in 2008 and the people that ended up best were ones that kept their money in their retirement accounts. If you look at the markets historically, there ends up being a growth of 7 or 8% over a period of an adult working life. That means there will be years where it will go up 10-11% and go down the same rate, but in the long run, they will be fine. The problem right now is that people don't have any money to put in the market anymore because they can't cover their living expenses.

This article gives me hope, though.

Was that due to essentially quarantining the entire country, and what will happen as the population begins living life like normal again?

The market hasnt seen a pandemic, pretty hard to say how it reacts.

People aren't going to have extra $ to boost the market for years

High end homes , cars seem like they are going to take a huge hit.

His point wasn't to dispel quarantining, but that the models that are put out there by epidemiologists assume the infection numbers exist in a vacuum. The models assume that people come into contact with different people every day, and never the same people twice. The reality is that most of us come into contact with many of the same people every day. If I gave the virus to you, and didn't know it, I don't give it to you again the next day as a new case.

That's not to say that social distancing is not a good idea, just that this may not last as long as we think. The reality lies somewhere between "it's only the flu" and "we all gonna die if we don't wrap ourselves in hazmat suits yesterday".

The market really has nothing to do with it.

Small businesses are getting pounded. Those are responsible for not only the majority of business owners, but employees as well. I have a friend who owns a bar/restaurant that has to lay off over half his staff, one of them being my brother. I have two other siblings in the industry that also have been laid off. Even if you have a little bit of savings, it takes a lot longer to recover from a lost paycheck.

- buffalofan19

Bars and Restaurants are uniquely COD businesses, though.

Most small businesses cut invoices and have ARs that will sustain them for another 30 days or so. The real pain will come in early may when the AR from April isn't there because nobody worked in March.

Hopefully in the interim there is a way we can figure out how to keep those places hpping, because they are the real backbone of the American economy in 2020.

(Im a busy executive).

This is true in places like Rochester and Buffalo, even moreso in Lockport Binghamton and Jacksonville Florida.

Not at all true in NYC, PHilly, LA, San Fran or those real places.

There was a guy on today that said if 75% of bars and restaurants reopen when this is all said and done he’d be surprised.

If one believes this then about 75% of the US population better get their affairs in order because they aren't going to be able to last 8 months much less 18. Not because of the illness but because they lack the skills to survive....

That would be about it. China has already peaked and it only took 2 and a half months.... We are about halfway there. Of course I question the motive of the media saying this...

Yet you trust that the Chinese are telling the truth about when it began and how many people are buried in the mass graves.
