Skip Krake from Boston to LA for a #1 draft pick
This was back in the Next Six expansion era when a lot of new hockey owners and executives had no idea what they were doing....did not understand the value of draft picks and thought that 3rd-4th liners and third-pair defensemen on good teams would automatically become stars on expansion teams - only to find they were 3rd-4th line and third pairing guys no matter where they played. - jkaflagg
Always felt bad for Kings gm George Maguire as owner Jack Kent Cooke basically forced him to trade #1 picks for older guys much like he did with the Redskins in football.

Kordic for Corson........
Then ...On June 30, 2009, Gomez was traded by the Rangers, along with Tom Pyatt and Michael Busto, to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Chris Higgins, Doug Janik, Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko.
Gomez went on to score 8 goals at a cost of 1 million per goal...

Surely it had nothing to do with the fact that they had Ed Belfour, the reigning Jennings, Vezina, and Calder winner in net.
Hasek ended up being better than Belfour in the end, but they are both HOFers. It's not like they traded Hasek to go with Dominik Roussell or something. - jmatchett383
Certainly it's more understandable given the presence of Belfour. But I'm going to push back a little bit more here.
In the five years combined following the trade, Belfour faced 7,452 shots and, based on his save percentage, allowed a projected 54 fewer goals than an average goalie would have when facing the same workload. That’s really, really good.
Hasek was 196 goals better than an average goalie against just 5,504 shots in the same five year period. That’s almost unthinkable.
No offense to Belfour, but I think calling him “still a hall of fame goalie,” and saying “Hasek ended up being better,” while true, doesn’t really give Hasek enough credit. That would be like choosing Joe Nieuwendyk over Wayne Gretzky and saying it wasn’t that bad because at least Nieuwendyk is also a Hall of Famer.
Chicago, to their credit, salvaged a lot out of that deal. As you said they still had Belfour, who had a couple of great seasons (albeit not Hasek-level great) left in the tank. Beauregard was flipped for Christian Ruuttu, and even the fourth round pick became Eric Daze. Those were two very competent NHLers who combined for 759 games and 488 points in Chicago.
But at some point you still have to grapple with the fact that the deal itself, quite literally, was trading away the best goalie of all time for a minor leaguer and a fourth rounder. |

We won the Cup with that first Peverley trade. - bruinzfan77
Can apply that to Thorton trade as well.
Hated the reason and the return for Thorton trade. But without that trade I doubt we sign Chara. Do we win the Cup without Chara? Probably not. And even on a good Sharks team Thorton has not won the Cup.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this one already. And, although I was a young kids who idolized Wendel and I was brought to tears, this is a steal:
Nordiques traded Sundin, Garth Butcher, Todd Warriner and a 1st round draft pick
Toronto gave up Wendel Clark, Sylvain Lefebvre, Landon Wilson and a 1st round draft pick
So basically we traded an aging, wore down Wendel for Sundin just starting his career.

I mentioned it after saying the Rangers trading him away was a horrible trade but at least we weren't the only team that gave him away. |

By trading Wendel the COL obtained (the hated) Claude L. Both Sylvain and Claude helped the COL winn the Cup. So... who did it work out better for in the long run? Did the Leafs win the Cup with Matts? |

That and a goalie named Bill Ranford. He was unreal in that 1990 Oilers Cup run. Messier turned Graves into a 50 goal scorer one year with the Rangers. I think the 94 Cup winning Rangers had 7 former Oilers on the team. Messier, Graves, Anderson, Tikkanen, MacTavish, Lowe, Beukeboom. |

I understood why Boston traded Thornton. I just didn't understand why they basically gave him away for nothing. |

I didn't.
They blamed him for the loss in the playoffs. The guy was playing with torn cartilage in his ribs. It's not like he was holding back the team either. They all under-performed.
But I agree - the return was bad. Like Seguin-trade bad. But at least we moved on to Chara and then won the Cup.

Yes it did and 3 of Keenan's favorite Hawks (Larmer, Mattaeu & Brian Noonan). They get sh!t for "buying" that Cup but besides Mess & Graves the core of that team was 4 homegrown players in Leetch, Richter, Kovalev & Sergei Zubov |

How does Ottawa choose Wade Redden over Chara? That was John Muckler wasn't it? Speaking of which, he was the Oilers head coach for that 1990 Cup winning Oilers team yet he never gets any credit for it. |

Boston is one of the few few organizations that trades young star players I couldn't believe they traded both Seguin and Hamilton while Kessel was still on the Leafs. |

Seguin - odd trade yes.
Hamilton - well he did not want to play in Bos. My understanding is Bruins offered him pretty much same deal Flames did and he rejected it. Maybe he didn't like some of his team-mates (coughmarchandcough)? We don't know. But he basically forced the trade.
Also, there seemed to be something off with Hamilton - personally. Look how long he lasted in Calgary...
