Jaromir Jagr, along with defenseman František Kučerah to the Washington Capitals for three prospects, Kris Beech, Michal Sivek and Ross Lupaschuk.

Yeah, I think these are the two most lopsided of all time. I think the first is more lopsided because it cannot really be explained and justified from the Whalers' standpoint. As a Pens fan, though, I was extremely happy about it .

The Jagr trade can be explained by the fact that there was not a cap while salaries were going up a lot in the late 90's/early 2000's and the Pens were forced to trade him because they could not afford him anymore. If it were not for the post-2005 cap there would have been more trades like this and the league would have become even more of a joke than MLB. There would be a handful of good teams, paying ridiculous salaries, and all the others would be de facto minor league teams.

Having said all this, the Jagr trade was still horrible as it did not at least include any higher draft picks and it was to a divisional rival. It was amusing to see him not work out with the Capitals, though. The Pens had a team and system that was built around Jagr and the Capitals were not able to adjust their team fast enough to make Jagr work well for them.

Eric Lindros for Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, future considerations —which eventually became Chris Simon — two first-round draft picks, and $15 million.
- ksmithwi

Has my vote, even thought Lindros was dominant, I believe Just Forberg alone was worth the trade. Anybody knows who the the 2 first pick turned into ?

for the time I actually thought this was a fair trade. All quality players going to boston. but not as sexy as Joe.

Worst trade in NHL history...still remember how people were so enamored with Chiarelli that they defended it for years.
- James_Tanner

well given Hall seems to destroy team spirit wherever he goes, might not be the worst trade ever

even if it was a bad one

Heres a timely one

New Jersey sent Johnny Oduya, Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, and a first and second round draft pick to the Atlanta Thrashers for Kovalchuk, Anssi Salmela and a second round pick

Gretzky to LA. It was all about money. Nothing else compares, even the Francis/Neely/Selanne/Oates trades.
- jmatchett383

The worst fall-out from that trade is all the people that love to defend their absurdly-stupid trade ideas by saying "well if Gretzky could be traded...."

It wasn't really that one-sided at the time - hindsight on P. forsberg is 20/20.
(The Hockey News had ranked Forsberg as the 25th best draft prospect in its 1991 draft preview). Hextall was a 1 year filler.

Is that why all of the big spending teams like Philadelphia, New York, Toronto, Boston, Montreal, and Chicago won so many Stanley Cups in the decade preceding the cap, while poor teams like NJ, Tampa Bay, Dallas, and Colorado never won any?

Come on, the salary cap was totally about helping the owners control player salaries, not about parity.

Jocelyn Thibault, Chris Simon, and Nolan Baumgartner were the 3 picks. Thibault was the most consequential one, since he was the biggest piece given up to get Patrick Roy.

Bruins never spent money before the cap, and went nearly 50 years before winning cup in 2011, and NJ, Dallas, and CO all won prior to the cap. What the heck are you talking about?

What hurt them was the owner didn't want to pay his 7 Million dollar bonus.

If the bonus is paid, ROR is only owed like a mil the rest of the season.

The offers were higher (If you believe what some of our guys have said, which i do)

Montreal had a higher offer for him, if Buffalo would pay the bonus, again allegedly

UGH!!!

The issue was Hasek wanted to go to Detroit to win a cup and didn't want Detroit to dismantle their roster to acquire him.

Hasek controlled that trade, and faked injury to get out.

Also the coach and Haseks wife messing around (Allegedly) didn't help.
