Bruins never spent money before the cap, and went nearly 50 years before winning cup in 2011, and NJ, Dallas, and CO all won prior to the cap. What the heck are you talking about? - 77emac77
Well I wasn't aware of that, thank you. The point is:
People acted like the cap was to create parity so that poorer teams (like NJ, TB, Colorado) could compete with the big spenders (like Philly, New York, and Toronto).
Never mind the fact that NJ, TB, and Col accounted for 6 Cups in 11 years preceding the implementation of the cap, while none of the top spenders (maybe Detroit in the top-5?) won any of them.
The cap was all about letting owners control salaries, nothing more. |

I recall Jacobs Sr. signing Marty Lapointe for 5 mil AAV in 2001. It was personal. Jacobs criticized Ilitch for driving up player salaries by having a huge payroll. Ilitch responded by saying "You're in the business of making money. I'm in the business of winning Stanley Cups." So Jacobs told Boston GM Mike O'Connell to "do whatever it takes to sign Marty Lapointe and shove it up Ilitch's a$$."
Well Lapointe signed with Boston while Holland responded by signing Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull and trading for Dominik Hasek. Red Wings won the Cup that season while Marty Lapointe showed that he was a third liner. Like the Red Wings knew he was all along. Solid role player on a stacked team. But not a top 6 guy. |

From the Blue Jackets Perspective:
1st round pick (Sean Couturier)
3rd round pick (Nick Cousins)
Jakub Voracek
for
Jeff Carter
The Flyers were pretty happy with that one. - wbon22
Mike Richards for Wayne Train and Brayden Schenn wasn't bad either.. |

Eric Lindros for Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, future considerations —which eventually became Chris Simon — two first-round draft picks, and $15 million. - ksmithwi
i know this seems lopsided but i think you'd be hard-pressed to find another GM during his draft years that wouldn't have packaged something similar.
Yeah Forsberg won cups and had a great career but Lindros was the face of the franchise. The amount of jerseys they'd go on to sell is reason enough to make the deal. |

The Rangers did package something similar. It was ruled the Flyers trade was made first. How different hockey history would've been had the Rangers got Lindros before all the concussions. |

I liked Marty Lapointe alot. He was tough and could score a big goal every now and then. Holland offered him 3 mil AAV and Boston gave him 5. I shook my head. |

Tom Kurvers for 1st round pick (Scott Niedermayer)
Yeah you never know how picks are going to turn out, but the results here sure speak for themselves. |

I believe Amonte and Vanbiesbrouck were the center pieces if it was the Rangers. I’m sure more was going, like firsts and prospects. |

What made the Teemu trade even way worse was that he was already a superstar in the Peg..
Trade a guy who scored 76 goals as a rookie .... awesome ...
Guys wanna talk about how great Austin’s rookie year was... yeah right, sure... |

did you see the Russian 5 documentary? Got to see it in a small theater here in Portland. Grew up with those wings teams so it was fun to watch.
The best part is Detroit wins their first cup and it looks like a fairy tale ending in the documentary and some kid blurts out "aw what a happy ending!" and there was a collective groan from all the adults since we knew what was coming up next .. |

Yes. I saw it. It was fantastic. I'm still saddened by what happened after. I wrote this awhile back..

OTT trades Pavol Demitra to STL for Christer Olsson. The way I heard the story from Ron Caron is that he invited Pierre Gauthier to STL to see Christer Olsson play and was trying to pry Demitra out of Ottawa. However, Mike Keenan decided not to play Olsson that night, infuriating Caron. Caron extended his invitation to Gauthier for next two days, wined him and dined him until the Blues played. Olsson played well and got an assist. The deal was then cosummated:
Christer Olsson 31 games 2G 9A 11Pts 14PIM (a bag of pucks and a Nathan's dog)
for
Pavol Demitra 59 games 13G 14A 27Pts 10PIM (and tons of upside!!!)
Ron Caron is a superhero!! |
