That's totally a microcosm for the bailouts too...some people are broke, need food, rent and health care. Then some people are saying omg if this continues I can't add the third swimming pool to my summer house.

There are way too many people that live well beyond their means and/or don't save any money and now expect tax dollars to bail them out. My wife and I have been careful with our money, lived well beneath our means, made sure we had 2 or 3 months salary in the bank (This is NOT a new concept) and saved for our retirement. Now that retirement savings is threatened AND I am going to pay for the idiots in our society.

... obviously this frustration does not apply to the people who are genuinely struggling to make ends meet and are affected by this so seriously through no faulty or negligence of their own. I am talking about the people with huge credit card debt who are driving a BMW or a 60K pickup truck that they don't need, who are now worried about their rent and grocery costs.

I don't know how you reliably tell the difference between these kinds of people, but when I listened to Andrea Horvath this morning it made me want to puke.

My wife and I are in very similar situation. We both work, good paying jobs, no kids. No debt (Mortgage only). We drive 2 cars one is 13 years old the other is 11. If we both lost our jobs tomorrow we could survive for 6 months without a lot of worry...we prepared for things.

I stopped looking at my retirement savings..its rough

Yeah I agree with you about all of that. It's also a problem to be paying for corporations who will still give out exec bonuses and so on. The US is worse in this regard, where predictably they are using this crisis to hand out corporate welfare.

Certainly, the percentagr of people who can't pay their bills if they miss a cheque is shocking. I'm not rolling in it by any means but I can handle some disruptions.

My sponge pump on my furnace isn't working. I know nothing about furnaces, other than I know not to tinker with my furnace. But it's obvious it's the problem - it's filling up with water and spilling all over the floor.

So I call up a reputable furnace repair company.

$130 to send a guy out to "diagnose the problem."

"Ummmm, the problem is the sponge pump isn't working."

"Yes, well we don't know that - we need to send some guy out to see that."

"OK, and then what?"

"Well, if it is, we'll make arrangements to send someone out with the proper parts to repair it - but don't worry, you won't pay for another service call, just the time it takes to repair it!"

"Wouldn't it make more sense to take down the model of the sponge pump and make sure your technician has one in the truck, so that he can simply switch them out while he is here?"

******GIANT SIGH******* "Fine, can you give me the model number of the pump?"

Our problem is we chose to live out in the middle of nowhere on a dead end road with cows for neighbors. we cant survive without 2 cars

Every so often (like when hockey on weekends with both kids are in opposite ends of the city) I'll rent a car for the weekend. Only if we can't arrange car pooling first - but often we do it for tournaments.

Anyhoo, people always look at me funny when I tell them I rent a second car when we need it. I figure we do it about 6 times a year. I figure we rent about 6 times a year, and never for more than $150 a weekend.

I tell this to them, and then take pleasure in watching them do the math, figure out how much they are paying for their second car, and how they are flushing money down the toilet.

Alot of people live paycheque to paycheque.
Any corporation that receives a bailoit of any kind must not be able to hand out any executive bonuses. They should be voided for the lifetime of the bailout, once the company pays it back, then they can resume paying executive bonuses.

Fwiw, public transit in most cities cost $100-125/mth. So it’s not that cheap, either. A bicycle is the way to go. Weed and eating out has always been my largest expenses.

I don’t mean to put any of those down who like to get Audi’s and BMW’s but (frank) I would never ever consider getting one if I had the money.

Their performance and quality is the same as cars much cheaper but the name has been built up to be this car everyone will be jealous of you if you have one.

I like a car that I can go anywhere in all seasons and if I ever wanted to go on a road trip I wouldn’t have to rent.
