And how’s he performed with 80% defensive zone starts against other teams’ top offensive talent?

I’ll answer for you...
You don’t know
Bc Larsson & Girgs have been doing such a good job in that role
And expecting Lazar to do as good a job is purely a guess

- jdfitz77

Nope, don't know 100%, do suspect he can evolve there and maybe become better based on attributes mentioned. Larsson IS better NOW, do you know unequivactly that Larzar couldn't get there? I'll answer for you, no, no you dont.
Larsson DZS = 61%
Lazar DZS = 59%

I like my idea far better for a couple more reasons. Your thoughts aren't gospel either.
Right?
Right.

Why would you sign either of Girgensons or Larsson to deals longer than 3 years considering the roles they play and the fact that they will be 27 and 28 respectively next season and before next season?

Signing either to a 4 or 5 year deal does not sound like a good idea.

- kingcong39

Don’t have to sign them to a 5yr deal
Sign them to a 3yr deal & then re-evaluate
Plenty of good defensive forwards have continued to do so past 30 or 31
But if they look like they aren’t working out...
that’s when u take a chance replacing them
Not when they’re playing really well

You far from alone regarding the bolded above. I know many people who experienced similar and believe it was due to the corona virus.

Did you still go to work when you felt like that?

I've always been a big believer in those who are sick staying home instead of infecting others.

Early January I lost my sense of smell and taste for 4 days straight. Was totally freaked out about it.

I’m confident I had it

Difference is that we’ve seen them play well in this role for over 2 seasons now
We’ve never seen Lazar (or Asplund, or whoever) do it

Does that mean they can’t?
Of course not
It’s just a bad risk to save $1mil

Don’t need to try it when u already have the sure thing
The extra $$ Girgs will cost over Lazar will not hurt Botts in building this team

But if Lazar doesn’t work out in that role,
that will hurt us

U think it’s ok to take the chance for a 1mil savings?
I don’t. I think that’s a dumb risk to take

- jdfitz77

Yes I do.

Lots of cheaper grinders > Girgensons > Coronabuzz

I would try and keep Larsson, with Girgs it's a different approach, is he the kid that under 2 coaches has scored 15 goals or is he the player that with 2 other coaches looked lost out on the ice. I don't really care if he stays or goes but at the right price I would keep them both. Those 2 drive play and they seem to be getting better at it as they get more comfortable in their roles.

Well if u look at it logically...

Let’s say u have 3 scoring lines
Do u want one of them playing the hard defensive time that a good checking line does?
Of course not
Bc then you’d be taking away from their scoring

So u NEED that other line to be effective in their checking role so that u can let the scoring lines focus on scoring

Otherwise,
building a team like u suggest just isn’t as effective

There’s a big difference between a cheap grinder & a good defensive forward

Sorry u can’t see that

Or I could let all three lines focus on scoring and send the fourth line out when i need the pace to slow down?

If you build the three lines correctly, I dont know why we have to assume that they cant keep up and counter offense with offense? Lots of teams are trending that way

And seeing as how they do it against other teams’ best players, and have been doing it for over 2 seasons now,
it just makes sense to me not to mess with it

Also, 80%?
And that is another great reason to save money on a 4th line and spend that money to upgrade the middle 6 such that nobody has to start in the DZ that much. That is where the money needs to go.

$1mil isn’t the difference between Kahun & a 30 goal scorer

It could be the difference between someone who’s in over their head in a defensive role & someone who’s good at it

Sabres need youngins to start coming up on there ELC or RFA contracts to help balance out the cap, the money should be going to fix the middle 6.

I no way am i advocating to pay these guys $3mil per like Kaiser suggested they’d cost

With the Cap not going up,
I don’t think either cost much more than $2mil
And could be less

Let’s just say one of the 3 scoring lines looks something like:
Kahun-Cozens-Johansson

Isn’t it reasonable to think they’d be better off with something like 65% ozone starts instead of 50% ?

Starting scorers in their own end more,
will lower their productivity offensively

Having a good checking unit allows you to put them in the most beneficial situations more often
Doesn’t it???

What were there contracts last year, 1.6 for Girgs and 1.5 for Larsson. If you could get them both for a little more, I could see it happening, but there will be teams that might make a push for there set of skills.

I'll agree to disagree.
Doesn't mean I think Girgs and Larsson are bad either.
I would invest that money elsewhere, improve the top 9 to relegate the 4th line to less responsibilities.
I feel as strongly that your idea is bad.

Not necessarily directed out you 36 since I don’t know your stance on what I’m about to say.

I find it hilarious that it’s ok to “overpay” a redundant scoring line winger in Skinner but when it comes time to pay important depth it’s “all about the money”

Agreed
But let’s put them in situations that Ute most likely to succeed in

Do u think that’s taking a lot of Def Zone starts against the Bergeron line? The Point line?
Etc, etc, etc

I don’t
That’s what I’m trying to avoid

Now it’s a different story is we were to have a Bergeron, Point, ROR, etc in the top9
Making one of those lines a “2way” line instead of a scoring line

We just don’t have the personnel yet to do that type of set up

I’m also not getting into a bidding war & paying them $3mil each either

I’m talking about signing them to a reasonable deal
