The head of the World Health Organization on Wednesday praised President Trump for his leadership in handling the novel coronavirus outbreak and said the president is "taking responsibility" for leading the United States' response to the global pandemic.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the United Nations health agency has repeatedly called for the heads of state to lead a "whole of government" response to COVID-19 and said Trump was leading by example.

"That's exactly what he's doing, which we appreciate because fighting this pandemic needs political commitment," Tedros said during an afternoon press briefing in Geneva.

Tedros said he and Trump had recently spoken and that the president is "doing all he can."

"I believe that kind of political commitment and political leadership can bring change or can stop this pandemic," Tedros said.

A Gallup poll released Tuesday found 60% of Americans thought Trump was doing a good job of dealing with the pandemic, while 38% disapproved.

And an ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday found 55% approved of Trump's response, a 12-percentage-point improvement over the week before.

$1,200 checks, help for businesses: Here's what's in the historic stimulus package for coronavirus

Like the other polls, the Gallup results fell along party lines, but the survey found that Trump's job approval rating jumped 8 percentage points among independents and 6 points among Democrats from its previous poll. Gallup noted that was unusual for the president and attributed that climb to a "rally effect" often seen when the nation is in crisis.

And Trump's overall job approval rating has climbed in other polls as well. According to RealClearPolitics, his average approval rating is at 47%, the highest level of his presidency. Similarly, the polling site FiveThirtyEight has him at approval levels close to those he enjoyed during his first months in office.

Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar unexpectedly praised President Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday night, saying it was "incredible and the right response in this critical time."

Omar, normally a staunch critic of the White House who herself has repeatedly drawn the president's ire, went on to quote Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., as saying "unprecedented times require unprecedented leadership" -- and, Omar added, "we are seeing that in our country right now."

"Finally, we should never let politics get in the way of good policy," Omar concluded. "This is a great start and hope others will be part of a united front to push for good policies that will help us work through the economic anxiety the country is feeling right now."

Omar was responding to a post by The Intercept's Lee Fang, who noted: "Trump suspending mortgage foreclosures, demanding cash payments to Americans, now invoking the Defense Production Act to force private firms to produce needed supplies is incredible. Kind of a shell shock for anyone who reported on any economic policies in the Obama years."

The World health organization, Americans and Trumps biggest critic all praising his response. Not sure why.

The first case of coronavirus has been reported in New York City. Both Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the risk to New Yorkers remains low.

They held a press conference together Monday morning to provide an update.

Governor Cuomo provided details about the patient. "The patient, a woman in her late thirties, contracted the virus while traveling abroad in Iran, and is currently isolated in her home. The patient has respiratory symptoms, but is not in serious condition and has been in a controlled situation since arriving to New York."

Governor Cuomo said he is more concerned about the perception and fear. "This isn't our first rodeo," the governor recalled SARS, MERS, Ebola, swine flu, etc.

The governor shared a story about explaining to his daughter why she should not be overly concerned.

"This is a situation can be managed," Mayor de Blasio said. "Get ready, here it comes, we're going to all be able to deal with this together."

80% of people infected with the coronavirus self resolve. Most people are able to treat themselves. 20% get ill and require medical attention. He quoted the CDC at 1.4% mortality rate for COVID-19. He said that is mainly senior citizens or people with compromised systems. Children seem to be less vulnerable to coronavirus than the flu.

"So far it does not seem to be a disease that focuses on our kids, in fact, the opposite," Mayor de Blasio said.

"The woman who tested positive, she's at home. She's not even at a hospital," Cuomo said. "We should relax."

The positive test was confirmed by New York's Wadsworth Lab in Albany.

The NYC Department of Health announced they are performing the novel coronavirus tests, which means they will be able to get results back much sooner.

"We'll have results within hours not days," Mayor de Blasio said.

I like Joker, but I'm taking this deal. I understand that LW is not a priority, but if Olofsson can play RW it could work out well. $3m for 3 more years is a pretty good deal for a 20g 20a player.
In addition, taking picks away from the Leafs will benefit us maintain a prospect pool and diminish their's.

Sounds like a bunch of fluff to me. I’m on Bill Gates’ side. Both Canada and the U.S should have orchestrated a 4-6 week national shutdown stating March 1st if not sooner to attempt to flatten the curve.

Short term loss for long term gain. Rip the band aid off quickly and it heals faster.

However if Trump is going to take credit for everything that goes right, he should wear the hat when things aren’t. He has the most power and could have made more attempts to flatten the curve sooner.

Hate the dude as a person, like some of his policies. Had a post about this last week.

I just think it’s hypocritical to read comment after comment of “its trumps fault” “ he was slow to react” “everyone’s an idiot who approves of him” “Cuomo is reacting better”

People are literally saying trump didn’t react fast enough but Cuomo did when 5 weeks after Trump put a travel ban on China Cuomo was still telling people this is no big deal and NY has it under control. If your gonna criticize and blame only one dude yet ignore Biden, Schumer, Diblasio, Cuomo and almost every other democrat who were way behind Trump then your criticisms are biased and ignorant.

I supported my last president, this one and will the next one. To think a global pandemic effecting almost every country now is “trumps fault” is laughable at this point

this is how f@cked up our country is

"U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican who represents Kentucky's 4th District, also hinted that he might object to a voice vote in the House of Representatives, which would force all members to return to Washington, D.C. and slowdown movement on the bill."
