If Social Distancing works, the estimated numbers should be going down. - kingcong39
When you initially throw a massive doomsday number up like 2 million, the CDC could recommend everyone go to Burger King and eat an Impossible Whopper and the recommendation would have "worked". |

Your alternate idea would have been what exactly?
Give out zero estimates or numbers and say we just don't know? Then what?
Live life like normal and see what happens? |

The 2 million number was nowhere near anywhere in the rest of the world and assumed that everyone would give it to everyone they came into contact with, regardless of whether the other individual already had it or not. The problem with the model wasn't that they were given, it's that they ignored a number of factors, and threw people into bigger panic than they needed to. |

The problem is extremes.
They throw out a huge number which throws everyone into a panic.
Doing nothing, all is well is as equally extreme.
No one with any common sense is ever in charge of these things unfortunately. |

The way your posts have been worded seem to indicate you think this is much ado about nothing, the virus is overhyped, and we should not have deviated from living life normally, for most people.
I don't want to infer though, so what do you think should have happened? |

When asked the question of how many people are going to pass from this? A simple honest we aren’t comfortable with presenting a number until we get all the information. We don’t want to get everyone in a panic by just throwing out a number. On the flip side we don’t want people to be all ho hum nothing to see here either. IMO those answers still work. |

They do, as long as there is direction along with that.
Direction such as: if you fit into one the of following high risk buckets (age, existing conditions, etc.), in order to be as safe as you can be, you should shelter in place.
If you are sick, you should not be going to work, or leaving your house. You should self quarantine for 14 days.
If you have family or friends who are in a high risk bucket, you should maintain distance from those people for their safety.
That sort of thing. |

I think more thought needed to be put into a model that was going to be released to the general public. For example, they looked at Italy, projected a multiple based on population and said "oh poop, we're (frank)ed". It didn't factor that the population of Italy was older. It didn't factor in the fact that the population of Italy smoked more. The measures we are taking are based on projections not factoring in these, and that's a problem. |

I'm not too worried about it, and neither is my family.
The Warren Buffet quote "be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful” doesn't just apply to investing. The fact that everyone is scared to fly and planes are averaging 5-10 people per flight most likely makes them a place less likely to contract or give out the virus than a grocery store, that is before considering the extra precautions the airlines and airports are taking (constant wiping down of airport fixtures, extra sanitizing before and after each flight, no serving snacks or beverages on the plane, etc.). It also saved me a bunch of money because flights cost next to nothing right now.
That's how I choose to look at it. If I get burned, then I own it and live with the consequences. - buffalofan19

The problem isn't the majority of people who understand the message. It's the ignorant that see that life is normal and that they aren't in a specific bucket, and continue with daily life. Unfortunately all have to suffer for the ignorance of some. It's the people who go to work when they are sick, because they can't take time off or feel like they have to push through because it's only "allergies." I'd like to believe that people can get the message, but we all know that the people who would be asymptomatic, or put themselves with people who don't understand would be the root cause for a massive spread. |

This isn’t directed at Buff19 but I am absolutely amazed at what a selfish society we’ve become.
No one (myself included) thinks or acts for anyone but themselves or immediate family.
It’s sad - sbroads24
I see all the people working in grocery stores and hospitals doing everything they can to keep the Country running. I'm proud of people's response to this. Winners see the positives through this. Losers focus on the negative and want this to be as bad as possible.
Any grocery store workers or medical field on here. Thank you for your service. You are doing an incredible job and I am grateful for your bravery. |

Just eye opening that's where we are with our country when people want citizens and families arrested for demonstrating their basic civil liberties. Where is there concrete data that even proves social distancing works, everything right now is assumptions. What needs to end is this mass hysteria. The "models" have gone from 2MM deaths, to 200,000, to 100,000 and now it looks like around 65,000, HUH. As a result of this the deaths associated with the combination of suicides, delays in early detection screenings and loss of healthcare because of unemployment will dwarf that of 65,000 I can guarantee that. But when we overcome this, nobody on the left side of the aisle will give an ounce of credit to the President. Next up will be an investigation into his "handling" of the virus as well as them hammering the "Trump Recession". - buffalokb
So funny that the amount of credit our President gets is on so many people's minds. Not to worry, he takes a least 75% of every press briefing to tell us all what a great job he's doing. And what the bloody heck is Jared fracking Kushner doing as part of our government's answer to this? I suppose everyone on the right would be fine with Chelsea Clinton being a top adviser and heading up our nation's pandemic respond team...😅😅😅. Why not get Lindsey Graham's gardner to lead the CDC while we're at it?

I disagree, people were advised, lockdowns declared and asshats still congregated in large groups...neighborhood parties, spring break, religious services, grocery stores, etc.
Many listened, too many ignored even with doomsday estimates, Italy under siege, etc.
The early models based on little data and using projections from MERS, SARs, 1917 Spanish Flu etc. have proven to be widely inaccurate. As more live data is realized and entered, assumptions modified; the resulting estimates have tightened...but are still inaccurate compared to reality.
The conundrum is what portion of the inaccuracy is related to data and assumption, and what portion related to mitigation actions inacted. To ssay mitigation is no longer required due to inaccuracies is just reckless..and insisting on tightly controlled mitigation factors for lengthy periods which may unnecessarily ruin or economy is assine.
It will be interesting to see what recommendations are and the associated projected timeline is that will be forthcoming over the next 2+ weeks or so. I could see rolling and phased in loosening of restrictions. Of course, Testing of antibodies will be a critical measure to formulate that plan. |
