some say Lemieux was better than gretzky, just had his career shortened...bobby orr transformed the defense and howe's career was legendary in length and production...we never saw him play live in his prime, and he was in a six-team league playing against stacked Canadian teams that horded all the talent from their provinces...

different eras different games...it's fun to kill time with but inevitably futile and i'd prefer the mount rushmore take featuring (in alphabetical order):

Howe

We might not have Intangibles.

But we're all in on In-TAGE-ables.

Well, ignoring for a moment that you can't just quit and collect unemployment, let's look at the actual numbers.

The median household income for a NY family of four is $65,000/annum or $5,416/mo, gross.

That family would max out the unemployment benefit at $504/week,*** which is $2,200/mo. And $600 extra a week (for three months) through CARES. That's another $2,400/mo or a total of $4,600/mo. Now add in the Stimulus check that is $3,400 for a family of four. Divide that by the same three months and that makes the monthly benefit in excess of $5,700. And I don't think the benefits are taxable, but you probably know more about that. (And *** if it's a dual income family i don't know if both furhloughed workers would get the $504/week unemployment.)

You really gotta pay attention to all the details instead of just spouting off the top of your head.

- Der Kaiser

All unemployment that comes through the state is taxable, and that includes the Federal boost from CARES. Only the Federal Stimulus is not taxable. A furloughed family (assuming dual income and both are furloughed/laid off) in your scenario might break even in take home pay if they set up their withholding correctly. A single income family will not, because the spouse will not be eligible for unemployment.

you're probably right...as of now I see two '03 locks--suter and Bergeron...that said...

it's a subjective and highly futile argument, like trying to say who the best nhl player of all time is

- Michael Pachla

Just curious on how you figure Bergeron and Suter as locks but not a Getzlaf, Staal or Burns. Getz and Staal have more points and the same amount of Cups just not the Selkes. Perhaps international play gets him the biggest edge, but then I would add Perry to the conversation with his international play, Cup win and Rocket and Hart trophies. Burns has more points than Suter and and a Norris.
How about Seabrook or Fleury with 3 Cups or Carter with 2?
Tough call on how many actually have a chance of getting in.

My figures were for a single income unemployment. They make $5700/mo gross unemployment and stimulus vs. $5,400/mo gross working.

I don't think anyone will discount Bergeron or Suter as sure-fire hall-of-famers...the others, imo, still have question marks although burns looks like a shoe-in...I think one or both of getzlaf/perry will eventually make it and fleury as well...dependent upon how his career ends, shea weber might be in the conversation as well...seabrook was great and might squeak in.

that said, I just wanted to keep it conservative in the discussion about '79 and '03 HOF'ers and if most on the above list get in, the 2003 draft class will no doubt be the best draft class ever

You have to include the stimulus check in both scenarios. Everybody gets one, whether they are laid off or not.

Unemployment is paid weekly.

3 months is roughly 13 weeks (4 full weeks plus an overflow of 2 to 3 days depending on the month).

65,000 annual salary / 52 weeks = 1,250 a week x 13 = 16,250

$504/week x 13 = 6,552
$600/week x 13 = 7,800

Total: 14,352

If you want to include the Federal stimulus check in only the unemployment scenario, then yes, they would be getting more, but everybody is getting the Federal Stimulus check regardless of whether they were laid off or not. To do so in one situation and not the other isn't comparing apples to apples. The $65,000 employed family is still getting more take home pay than the $65,000 family on unemployment. Both will get their incomes boosted by the same $3,400 stimulus.

The Norris always goes to the best offensive d-man.

Erik Karlsson couldn’t defend you or I coming down the wing.

That’s why a guy like Brodin flies under the radar and id splooge in my shorts if we got him.

Yeah, not a fan of giving the award for best defenseman to guys that aren't good at defense (Burns, Karlsson twice) and have said for years that there should be a separate award for offensive dman like they have for defensive forwards.

That is correct.

What I meant was, the check I am getting wouldn't be enough to replace a single paycheck. I am still employed and working from home, fortunately.

Most people, especially furloughed workers, are going to get less take-home pay than they would would otherwise. "Just collect unemployment and stay inside" shows almost zero financial acumen whatsoever.

- buffalofan19

You're basing the above on most people making more than around $60K?

A close friend makes $62K and she will make more on unemployment than she will when she was working, comparing both take home amounts after taxes.

Fancy stats say Hamphus Lindholm is the best d-man in the world right now.

Would I agree ? Not necessarily, but how many people really ever talk about the guy ?

Sure playing in Anaheim doesn’t help his cause but he’s got the best defensive metrics and flips the ice at the best rate right now and he’s just entering his prime.

Only if you include the Federal Stimulus in the unemployment scenario and not the employed scenario. You get the Federal Stimulus regardless of whether you lost your job or not. If she were not laid off, she would still be making more in the employed scenario.
