to be fair to Michael, at the time the trade was made pretty much everyone said it was a win for Ottawa. I don't think anyone expected that pick would end up being even a top 10 pick, let alone the #4.

obviously, in hindsight, the trade looks awful.......but only in hindsight

Good point. And we haven’t had the same level of hindsight for the Pageu trade. We are already drafting the next Crosby with the first rounder so obviously a win.

Duchene was very productive in Ottawa considering the circumstances. There were other issues on the team that he couldn’t fix. He was simply an upgrade on Turris.

The pieces given up outside of Turris are meh. Hammond even pro anymore? Bowers is a middling prospect if I have ever seen one. Wild card is Bowen Byram who was picked at #4. He could be a very well-rounded d-man or could easily end up being a 5/6 pairing guy. And 3rd round picks are thrown around all the time.

I still don’t think the trade is as bad as people made it out to be. Where Dorion failed was his evaluation of the team after somewhat of a miracle run to the conference final. Which I guess always takes into account when assessing the trade.

The Pageau deal is an easy win as the deal just made sense in the team’s current situation and a 1st rounder was gravy. What is baffling is the amount of people that felt he should be retained.

It all comes down to Byram. Who is widely regarded as one of hte best prospects around right now.

Similar to the Karlsson trade, which is mostly falling onto San Jose's first. Even with the emergence of Norris, if that pick was above the top 15, people would be singing a very different tune.

Here is what will happen at the 2020 NHL draft:

1) Lafreniere
2/3) Byfield & Stutzle

Raymond, Holtz, Rossi, Drysdale WILL be gone by 10

It depends on who the teams like at this point, and I imagine Lundell, Sanderson, Perfetti will also ALL be gone by pick 13. I believe Askarov will be gone by 15, possibly even 10, but there's a CHANCE he could slide a big like Samsonov did to Washington. IF he is still there at 21, would you take him? Or would you rather someone that slips like possibly Lapierre?

Sens would have 4 picks in round 2, with one being at 33, so it's hard to believe they won't get a quality pick there too.

Picks 10-20 would likely see Zary, Quinn, Gunler, Holloway, Mercer, Lapierre, (who could fall), and possibly 1 or both the 2 Canadian D-men Guhle or Schneider.
