It’s not really debatable, Benning’s guided the franchise for their five worst on-ice performing years in its history. That’s a fact. All the while trying to be competitive and spending to the cap, trading away picks and youth for quick fixes as well as poor UFA signing.
As I’ve said before, the God-send is the NHL rewards poor performances with high draft positions thereby giving you access to the best kids in the world. Not exactly rocket science, I mean Craig McTavish selected Draisaitl third overall, does that make him one of the best GM’s in Oilers history? |

Dave Nonis and Patrick White. Enough said. - bloatedmosquito
Well actually it’s not enough said. He also drafted Edler, Schnieder, Hansen, Raymond and Grabner. It’s a better group pf players than Gillis drafted, as Gillis didn’t actually pick anyone other than Bo and Hutton. |

This is horsepoop. He’s been rebuilding the last three years. Drafted a new core, made some excellent trades to build around that new core. His UFA signings have been his biggest failing, but his success of drafting and developing players is bigger than those mistakes imo. This is a team setup to start making the playoffs for a while.

It's always easy to focus on the negatives of Benning's first five years all the while ignoring the positives of what's coming based of what's he's doing now. Benning may be a lot of things and has weaknesses like all GM's, but surely you have him ranked below Keenan? lol
Said it before. Many on here will owe Benning a glorified apology in a few years time once Hughes, Peterson and co have this club in PO spots year after year. No one will care much about Benning's first five years then lol

This is total horsepoop as he’s not been rebuilding at anytime while spending to the cap. When his plans/teams continually failed he’d start to tank it up in February, I’ll give him that.
2016 he traded away our 1st rnd pick McCann, the 33rd overall pick (our 3rd round pick for Pedan) and our 4th round pick to acquire Gudbranson so they could be competitive not rebuild, Jesus Christ man.
He finished 2nd last in the league and entered the draft with only six picks, and that’s only because he got two back from trading Lack. |

i for one am absolutely shocked that a team that has been bottom 10 for half a decade has a core of young players derived from high draft picks.
surely bettman must have rigged it somehow. |

Freakin nailed it
For draft.picks imo after the trade deadline a new side season starts. Highest win pct of all the teams that miss get the best shot at 1st overall. Any team no matter how bad can go on a heater |

This is also total nonsense, you’re not deemed great at your job because you finished so bad that you got access to the best kids in the world. Do you think the Oilers fans owe a debt of gratitude to Kevin Lowe for bad finishes but drafting Hall and RNH, or Craig McTavish for finishing poorly and drafting Draisaitl, or Chiarelli for drafting McDavid?
What you’re saying is the Oilers future or present is a product of those three idiots drafting well and every Oiler fan owes them a huge apology |

I find it fascinating that people can recognize the 'lottery picks don't equal good management' thing when they look at the Oilers and mock the Oilers and it's obvious to them that the Oilers sucking and getting McDavid/Draisaitl/RNH/Nurse doesn't mean that team has been well run. But are completely blind to it when it comes to us, to the point that these people are constantly using moves that are *identical* to what the Oilers did as evidence that we're not the Oilers.
"We had to overpay Beagle so we didn't turn into the Oilers like when they overpaid Eric Belanger as a depth center!" |

I’m not playing the “which pile of poop is better” game with you.
Dave Nonis was a poop GM who achieved nothing. Going completely off the board to pick a player in the first round who couldn’t even make the AHL is inexcusable. That pick has to be the worst in a long, sad franchise drafting history. |

it's the same way that people used to mock the leafs for years for trying to compete rather than do a total rebuild but will find justifications as to why their team can't or didn't.
some teams/management get justifications and context while some others don't. is what it is. |

if that's the worst pick in franchise history and mike gillis traded that player for ehrhoff, that means that gm mg is the best canucks gm ever. it's just math at this point.

Some are commenting on statistical fact. Others are commenting on potential, opinion, and hope.
Not much of a debate. |
