Hischier is highly overrated and overpaid.

I like DuBois a lot and Barzal is definitely solid, but I think Aho and Svechnikov are on different levels than the aforementioned players.

I know! $925K is way too much for a 1st line center.

Yeah. Funny, but not quite accurate.
Since the Devils are not making the playoffs no matter what metric they use to select teams, that means Hischier's season is over and the next time he suits up his salary will actually be $6.5M higher than you represented. That, my friend, definitely puts him in the overpaid category.

lmao

They're the same age, so this makes it easy.

Sebastian Aho has more goals this season than Barzal has the last two combined.

Aho's worst season has more goals than Barzal's best (and in fact occurred while Barzal was still in the WHL)

Aho kills penalties, Barzal does not.

They've played in the same international competitions too.

2016 WJC:
Aho - 14 points in 7 games
Barzal - 3 points in 5 games

2018 World Championships:
Aho - 18 points in 9 games
Barzal - 7 points in 10 games

I like Mat Barzal. He's a shifty guy out there and can make some magic happen. He has elite level hands.

Sebastian Aho is better. He drives everything.

Did you invite Tanner and he said it was a toss up between Keller and Hayton?

You're entitled to your opinion. But you can't be overpaid for a season that hasn't even started and may likely be delayed as well

I like Hischier. I'd hope he's more than the 50~ point guy he's shown so far, but even if that's where he caps out that's honestly getting close to the $6 million range these days.

Close to, I agree. So, when Hischier is being paid $7.25M, that would make him overpaid, no?
These days, based on what players are making, teams are basically paying $1M per 10 points per season.

I’ll have 72.7 kilos of whatever booger sugar you’re selling my friend.

Barzal is a great player but Seabass absolutely blows him out of the water. I guarantee all 31 GMs (even Lou) would build a franchise around Aho over barzal

LOL right? First off, Barzal is not a GREAT player; I think you were just trying to be kind. He's a very good player. Aho and Svechnikov are on another level than him.

I definitely agree that Aho is the better of the two, but I can imagine a somewhat compelling argument to the contrary.

While neither team were offensive powerhouses, the Islanders are among the league's worst offensive teams with 189 GF. Meanwhile, Carolina sits 28 goals up as a team. While it's an imperfect measure, an argument can be made that the quality of team surrounding Barzal is lesser, thus making his raw scoring numbers more impressive. For direct comparison, Aho's primary linemates were TT and Svech while Barzal's were Lee and Eberle; pretty easy to see who has better support.

Despite this difference in support and team style, Barzal remains admirably close to Aho in scoring numbers (66 to 60 all strengths, 37 to 39 at 5-on-5). For example, Barzal's only season not under Trotz saw him post a pretty ridiculous 2.88 pts/60 (a 0.46 improvement on Aho's best season). Again, that's an imperfect measure to use as an argument for a variety of reasons, but I don't think it should be discounted entirely.

Barzal draws substantially more penalties (27 to 15 at all strengths, 17 to 7 at 5-on-5) and is pretty much the engine that drives New York's transition play. He's McDavid-esque in his speed and puck control on zone entries and is relied on heavily in those respects- at least from what I've seen.

I think the case for Aho being better is stronger, but I don't think it should be seen as quite as huge a gap as many are suggesting it is.

I don't think the gap is that substantial, offensively they have pretty similar production albeit in different ways.

I just think that Aho's all around game tips the scales. He's strong (and genuinely dangerous) on the PK and is way less prone to turning the puck over. Overall he's just flat out stronger.

I feel like for all the Aho love I'm giving right now I should probably point out that while he's currently better than Svechnikov, Svech is going to overtake him very shortly.
