JT scores a lot of goals. He's topped 30 multiple times, just missed it a few other times including shortened seasons. That's direct production that's hard to ignore. Also, Tavares is a franchise player, they both are arguably.
I hear ya though, I think a true #1 D is harder to find. - golfingsince
Always needed in the Po’s to have the back end be a force. Upfront feeds off of that. A JT is important but he needs so many other parts to be key. |

A few top teams got early exits even with top Dmen. TB got an early exit last year and so did Calgary.
Don't get me wrong your chances do improve. I don't know if there is a formula for winning the playoffs.

I wonder how AV would have done (if he hadn’t been fired) with Horvat, Virtanen, Pettersson and Hughes (among others )? |

probably would’ve won the Cup if the season wasn’t halted. Vigneault is money, such a great coach. |

I have Hedman ahead of O'Reilly by quite a bit, neck and neck with JT. A 25 minute / night all situations Dman is quite a find. The old #1C vs #1D debate. Whereas I give JT a slight edge now, I think Hedman might age better. - golfingsince
Ive got Hedman over Tavares and orielly 3rd. For my money, Hedman is the best dman in the league. |

Kind of a dead heat if you ask me. Both are fantastic players! Tampa did great drafting Stamkos the year before so taking Hedman was a no-brainer. Had they taken Doughty 1st overall the year before then I’d have taken Tavares.
Because they’re both so good you could draft for need. |

Av would have got out-coached in one of the rounds and Philly would've been punted. |

Ya it’s not a super clear cut thing for me unless it’s Hedman. Like i said, he’s the best dman imo. Tavares is an absolute stud, but i just think there’s more value in having one of the top 5 d in the league rather than say top10 or arguably even 15 center. I do really like JT, he’s in my top 10, im just saying there’s an argument he isn’t top 10. I just thought id bring it up. |

I like Hedman, but if I had to pick one Dman in the league it would be Seth Jones. |

come on man...he’s good but you’ve gotta be joking taking him over any one of Hedman, Carlson, Josi, Makar, Quinn Hughes, Dahlin, Werenski or Pietrangelo.
He’s great, but he’s not as good as any of the guys I mentioned right now. |

He plays 25+ minutes a night for a poopty team. Don't look at the point totals, his team routinely scores 60 less goals per year than TB. He's 25, strong, smooth skating Dman. Reminds me of a young Chris Pronger without the dirtiness and douchiness, less edge. |

Oh trust me I look at way more than points, something he also is very good at, but, I just don’t think he’s as good as the top guys in the league.
That doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s great, he is, but I take Hedman over him every day of the week. |

On a side note.
For all the props Yzerman gets for building up TB's roster, selecting Drouin over Jones was a major gaffe.
Jones was the clear cut #2 prospect for awhile, even challenged for #1. He fell off for no other reason than he was a Dman.
Imagine Hedman and Jones as your top pairing right now? |

Drafting 1OA & taking Stamkos is a no brainer nothing to do with great drafting. |

I don't think he was calling it great drafting, just that they had a great 1C. I mean he routinely scored 50 goals a year before injuries toned it down somewhat. |
