you're basically pointing out that there are 10% of journalists that are bright and objective. (i agree with a lot of points you make, but when you're relatively close to a specific topic (in general, not this specific case) it becomes very obvious that the press in general isn't very well informed, nor are journalist making a real effort in being so. lots of 'media coverage' is copy paste as well - without vetting information. - MaximusAurelius
Thanks for the media lesson, Donald. Or Vlad.

Some journalists are lucky enough and good enough to be able to focus on a certain subject for a long time and gain a solid understanding of the field. But for the most part they are not trained experts in that field. If they’re good, they develop a range of contacts, an ability to sort through bullpoop versus some degree of truth and take complicated topics and make them understandable.
You’re fooling yourself if you don’t think that all takes skill or that you don’t ha e to be bright to do it well. A lot of the poop uncovered about guys like Nixon and Trump came from journalists. Since they’re not experts, obviously they are vulnerable and anybody who really knows an issue can point to errors.
Much of journalism is less expertise driven and involves running down fairly boring stories. It’s a good place for people new to the field to learn how to run down stories.
poop like yesterday happens in a fog with a lot of confusion. What we see is a tension between wanting to share information about what is going on and nobody really knowing what’s going on. Official police statements might be holding things back while all kinds of stuff is swirling. This is where media has more trouble and will often push stuff out too early.
Anyway, I’ve know lots of very smart journalists. The person leading Canada through the pandemic right now is a former journalist. (I know you could have done a better job, etc) - Canada Cup
Agreed. And I'll add a quick two points:
- journalists today are force to play a game they all hate. It's absolutely true that there is pressure to tweet out before others. I wish I knew a solution, but you have good papers struggling and InfoWars making millions - it's franked up. It's sad to see that people would rather get their "information" from these pathetic shams - but I guess that's where we are today.
- the RCMP did not do a good job yesterday of conveying information. Let me be clear: they had better things to do with their time, and other than the public's right to know information for their own security (which I think they did fairly well), everything else is of secondary importance. But even the RCMP's presser afterwards was a bit of a nightmare - they weren't prepared for such a media event (god bless them, they never thought they would have to do something like this). So the media had a hard time doing their jobs. |

Certainly one point of view. The man was obviously deranged. Energy and money should stil be prioritized to the innocent victims' families, including the RCMP officer who's two children don't have a mother now. Preventative measures should also be made - mitigating future attempts by similar lunatics. Saving the life of such a sack of sh!t to make sure he suffers should not be a priority IMO. - winsix

Not sure how you get from some journalists are lucky enough to be able to focus on certain areas to only 10% are bright. Journalists dig up all kinds of information and get way more fight than they get wrong. We are incredibly well informed about what goes on in the world and I don’t live in a country where journalists fall out of their Moscow apartment windows five times. |

I am not sure this is the case.
Seems to me a lot of journalists actually like that 'game'.
Reminds me of the Eastwood movie "Richard Jewell" (based on real events). Poor guy died very early of a heart attack (not saying that it's related, but I'm sure we all agree that severe stress is not very healthy). |

why do you keep bringing up Russia??
I'm living in the European Union, and I've lived in Canada as well.
the current 'need for speed' and the fact that information is available (via web) directly in my personal view means that there is less and less quality in journalism (even the proofreading sucks quite a bit of the time).

Don’t confuse Twitter with journalism. How do you think articles get published in reputable news organizations? Do you not understand the requirements about multiple sources? And yes, there are (frank) up, often big ones. And those (frank) ups become big issues because people are all over the papers when they happen and they don’t happen often. People lose their jobs over that kind of poop. |

which newspapers do not use websites for 'breaking stories'?
the fact that there only a few publishers / media companies left combined with the ties between media companies and political parties is a good indicator that 'true independent news coverage' is an illusion in most cases. |

Clint Eastwood, ah. Remember that time he appeared onstage at the Republican National Convention and had a 12 minute conversation with an empty addressing it as Barack Obama on live t.v? That was based on live events too. |
