Last night I was looking at the Best Picture nominees.
There's a ten-year stretch where I think I saw 5 of those films in the theatre.
Oddly enough, that stretch coincides perfectly with the time we had kids.
A lot of poop films got nominated.
Little Miss Sunshine was nothing special.
Same with Juno.
Precious was nothing more than virtue signalling by the Academy.
Silver Linings Playbook was meh at best.
And I haven't seen it, but how the frank does Mad Max: Fury Road get a Best Picture nomination? WTF?
Anyhoo, it's a good exercise, because it reminds you of some films you should rewatch, or watch for the first time:

Mad Max Fury Road is an amazing art film and action film, it arguably should have won. I'm cereal. Check it out. |

I started watching 'Joker' a few weeks ago.
After 25mins or so (when the gun went off in house) I decided I shouldn't waste any more time on the movie.
Supposedly it would be a great movie, but it couldn't convince me at all...
might pick up the movie where i left it, but the initial part felt a bit pointless.
There is less and less good storytelling in movies these days, and more and more 'look at how good I am at making a movie'..

So can I assume it is nothing like the other Mad Max movies?
Mad Max I and II were what they were - cheap B movies made in Australia. Good for laughs, but nothing more.
That Thunderdome piece of poop was perhaps the stupidest film I have ever seen half of (no way I would sit through the entire thing). |

its like them, in that they are post-apocalyptic action films...I like MM2, mostly because I watched it a lot as a kid..but I havent watched it in a long time.
Thunderdome, I like the first bit with Bartertown..but the rest is dumb |

It's a profound work of art and also a savage dystopian chase action movie. It's truly the movie Miller wanted to make I think.

Here's the synopsis from IMDB:
An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There's Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.
My God, don't you people realize this is just a cheap rip-off of The Last Chase, a movie made in 1981 starring Lee Majors and Canadian Chris Makepeace?
It is the future. Evil fascists have forced everyone to recycle and drive electric cars, and have oppressed all those poor people who want to drive Ferraris and smoke cigarettes. Hero Franklyn Hart (Lee Majors), an ex-racing car driver, decides to make a statement by pulling out his old race car and driving cross-country at one hundred fifty miles (two hundred forty-one kilometers) per hour (he siphons gas from old gas station pumps). Taking along a young computer hacker, he drives for the Holy Land, the Free State of California. Of course, the powers that be try to eliminate him by hiring Captain J.G. Williams (Burgess Meredith) to shoot him down with a fighter jet, which, too, are virtually extinct.
No, really, this was an actual movie.

Not sure what the big deal about age here is. She was 25 or 26 in that picture.
Not that any of us old guys would have a chance, not even a Jim Carey chance, but she is not a minor.

You ever wonder how the Bionic Man could lift a truck up with his bionic arm and two bionic legs - but no reinforced spine?
Wouldn't his bionic arm just rip right out of the socket? |
