I love horror, I just think a lot of it is bad. And I'm jaded because I watched a ton of it growing up.

The Exorcist is the best ever imo. Interesting that you call Clockwork Orange horror...I'd probably call it science fiction, though it is horrifying.

As came up not too long ago, The Thing stands out for me...Let The Right One In...Dawn of the Dead...the originals in all cases

Ginger Snaps is a fantastic, overlooked gem of a Canadian horror movie.

- Zezel

Many movies cross different genres including Clockwork Orange, but there are definitely a disproportionate number of crappy horror movies. I think great directors tend to put out much higher quality material. Hitchcock, Polanski and Kubrick all put out horror films of quality IMO. Something I saw when studying film were two horror movies in 3D made by Andy Warhol in the 70's. Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula. Not great movies, but worth seeing especially in 3D. Lots of sex, funny as hell and gross to the max. Entertaining and full of art and set designs by Warhol.

I guess I've never understood the naysayers. Ever since it beat Goodfellas it seems to have garnered an unfair reputation as being "overrated". It's a shame it ran up against maybe the greatest movie of all-time to run against.

But it has wonderful performances, a compelling narrative, and some surprisingly thoughtful criticism per native treatment during Western/frontier expansion.

I do love the movie but I have yet to hear and really biting criticism from detractors that resonates with me. Naysayers typically point to the Goodfellas snub, a completely wrong-headed "white saviour" allegation, or some unrelated Kevin Costner hate (I'm not his biggest fan either).

Having said that, this is probably the most I've ever written in "defense" (if you could call it that) of the movie. I guess Coranavirus craziness has taken a hold of me tonight.

It was really seeing Costner get the Director award over Scorcese, you're right, he could never shake that off. It doesn't really matter as you say, that's the nature of the Oscars which don't mean anything after the fact anyway.

I'm one of those people that, maybe if I go back and watch Dances I'll like it, but I barely remember it and always just resented it because of my worship of Goodfellas. Although the movies really don't have anything to do with each other.

I will say, Casino is a movie that in turn, gets unfairly snubbed because of comparisons to Goodfellas....

The beach landing is one of the best sequences in film history.

For Hanks movies, I don't think Gump has aged well. I gotta go with Castaway as best Hanks performance, and overall I prefer it as a whole thing to Ryan, but that opening is such an achievement that overall it's the most important movie he's been in, let's put it that way.

Shout out to The Man With One Red Shoe and Splash.

He's hilarious in Dragnet. One of the best tv remakes ever

Midsommar is a masterclass film in terms of building tension. The Director's Cut is great stuff.

Prometheus has some fantastic scenes and is gorgeous to look at. The problem is that it doesn't seem to know if it wants to be part of the Aliens franchise or its own thing. Plus, wtf is going on with the Engineer at the beginning of the film? And why is he such an asshat at the end of it?

Some great performances (Michael Fassbender is awesome) mixed with some dubious character choices (Guy Pearce's Weyland is such a (frank)ing cartoon).

Also, why can't Charlize Theron learn how to turn when a giant cylandrical-ish object is rolling straight for her?

Such a frustrating movie. But hey, Ridley Scott just doesn't seem to give a (frank) anymore, does he?

Why did they even cast Pearce in that role? It made zero sense at all. Did Scott owe him a favour? Watching it, you're like hey, that old man is Guy Pearce - why? That's all I could think. Why is Guy Pearce a fake old man?

It was like bad old person makeup on Star Trek: Next Generation. Like when they turned Brent Spiner into Data's creator. But there it made sense because it was Spiner, and presumably Data was made in his creator's image. And it was a relatively low budget tv show. How could old Guy Pearce be so bad in a contemporary big budget movie?

(frank) Ridley Scott.

- Zezel

I feel like Ridley Scott has completely lost any desire to spend any energy challenging film decisions. Whether it's casting choices, plot points, character motivations, etc. I think his head is so far up his own bum that he thinks everything he decides is automatic gold... so why spend a single second critically thinking about anything?

So frustrating considering his early oeuvre is so fantastic.

I knew something was up when he decided to pretend that Deckard was always supposed to be a (frank)ing replicant a decade after Blade Runner was released. Don't get me started on that... But that, I think, was the moment when Scott turned into a complete and total egomaniacal asshat.

About 28% who were given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, versus 11% of those getting routine care alone.

But you would think the ones given the drug were more severe.

I franking hated Dances with Wolves. Perhaps the most over-rated movie ever.

I've just had my first beer, so it's angry rant time.

Dances with Wolves isn't the worst.

Silence of the Lambs is the worst.

Anthony Hopkins is the worst franking over-actor of all time.

You want to see a scary Hannibal Lecter? Watch the original Manhunter, directed by Michael Mann.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091474/

100X scarier Dr. Lector. The guy plays it so cool.

The entire film is great. Super 80s vibe - it's like a Miami Vice show, but darker.

- Atomic Wedgie

Yes, Manhunter is better than SOTL. I'll never understand how thatmovie swept the Oscars.

Agreed. Casino is pretty fantastic. Great cast - especially James Woods. Damn, is there an actor who can play a sleazy slimeball better than that guy?

Definitely one of my fave Scorcese films.

Cant agree, it was opposite for me. I know Manhunter was made first but it felt more like it was the cheezy knockoff of the two...

The Exorcist is absolutely flawless. What makes it work is the alchemy of Christian superstition with the corruption of an innocent child. I think watching this film as a parent has made this movie even more psychologically terrifying than when I watched it as a kid.

Nothing beats John Carpenter's The Thing though. Tension, atmosphere, isolation, horrifically realized alien designs, and paranoia rolled up into one. Stellar cast led by a prime Kurt Russell and Keith David.

A Clockwork Orange is arguably Kubrick's best work. I also don't consider it a horror film nor science fiction but it certainly shares elements of both. It's a mix of dystopian themes and social/psychological satire. And so damn quotable... "The Durango '95 purred away a real horrowshow. A nice warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts!"

Hnourable mention for Prince of Darkness, a severely underrated and underappreciated horror classic. Man, Carpenter was the man in the 80s - unimpeachable greatness.

- mjones242

The Thing, greatest scene ever in horror is when that dudes head popped off turned upside down and grew spider legs.

Right on

I have a grey squirrel too, and also a giant black squirrel. Which is surprising because they’re city squirrels. The red squirrels are female doges compared to the grey and black ones.

It’s actually sorta crazy how much wildlife is around here. The birds are the best, tho. It’s like a zoo.

I haven’t seen my little Least Weasel in some time now...I’m fearing the worst. I love that little guy...he’s so tiny. We have a big fox that cruises the street as well, and I haven’t seen him/her either.

Yeah, it’s sad when they stop coming around. I spent all winter trying to get an ermine, but no luck. Foxes are great hunters, so there’s not many mice.

Right now it’s been a lot of turkeys and deer. They seem to hangout together if the tracks are any indication. But tbh, I’m a tad bit spooked by the bears, especially this time of year.

Dances With Wolves is (frank)ing epic and one of the best Westerns of all-time. The extended cut is 4 hours long and I wish it was longer.

Did Goodfellas deserve the Oscar nod? Sure. But who (frank) cares about the Oscars anyway? So many dumb decisions and completely subjective anyway nonsense. Suffice it to say, in no way shape or form should Dances lose credibility as a film because it beat Scorcese's masterpiece in a garbage awards show.

Silence of the Lambs is also an incredible film. Anthony Hopkins can definitely chew scenery but he is pitch perfect in this movie (the less said about the sequels, the better).

Manhunter was pretty great but there's no universe where it's a better film than Silence. Brian Cox is a great actor but GTFO with this contrarian bull(poop).

- mjones242

Also leaving out food for them to lure them to your backyard camera is a decision you should revisit lol
