Not to pile on here, but there is also no guarantee that a vaccine can be developed for this. - Chunk
For sure. Still waiting for the AIDS vaccine. Flu vaccine is sporadic in its effectiveness because there are so many strains. |

If the NY study is accurate 99+% survive. That should take the fear of death off the table. - mohel
Yes, agreed. I’m quoting from memory, but I believe the flu death rate is around one-tenth of 1%. I’d be quite happy if COVID-19 turns out to have a similar rate. |

So the new number for you is 2,000,000 people? Good to hear
So is that more or less than the flu and car accidents? - BetweenTheDots
Ridiculous assumption that every person will be infected. Where did you get that, from the genius Doctor who said people should flee Florida for Illinois? |

Is it that hard for you to show at least a shred of optimism/faith...I mean Jesus...
This isn’t the end of the would my friend. Lighten up, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Hope is a good thing. |

Trying to get back to hockey...
Considering they played together in CHI for most of Daze's career, who would you rather have at their absolute best, Daze or Amonte? - Chunk
Amonte, hands down. More complete player compared to Daze. Fast, durable, versatile. He also played with an edge and captained the team for a few seasons. |

I just hope that light isn't an oncoming train.
Hope you are all well over there.
Now for some hockey talk ( shock horror!)
I really only know of Daze from console hockey games as coverage was really hard to come by here for most of his career, but it seems like another example of what could've been.

Hawks made the finals in 91-92 vs Pitt. 92-93 was the Canadiens over the Kings. The Habs Cup victory was their latest to date. |

Hey Aus! Hope you are well down there. I used to really like Daze simply because he was a big guy who had a great shot and could get to the prime scoring areas. He just broke down. |

As well as can be Chunk. Bored outta my mind with restrictions and so on, but still employed and working, so theres that. Our big island is relatively secure and protected.
Unfortunate for Daze, and for the Hawks. I read some criticism about him not using his size (hello most oversized blackhawks d-men of the last 10 years - Looking at you Viktor Svedberg!!), but gotta wonder how much of that was him just trying to protect his body as much as he could, cause he knew his time was limited. |

That is a very fair criticism of Daze. I still liked him regardless. I don't care if it is someone the size of ADB or Daze, if you are a good hockey player, I'm gonna root for you.
The injury story is going to be different for every player. I always thought he had something degenerative. It's why I'm just cautiously optimistic that Seabrook getting all the work done will ultimately help him out. |

You may have answered this before. At what point (or more to the point, under what conditions) do you believe it would be safe to re-open with distancing, masks etc.?
I'm just trying to get an idea of where you are coming from. I am not minimizing at all the seriousness of the situation, but there are several limiting factors that will alter when we start getting back to life. The government can only print money for so long. If this goes on for too long there will be increasing unrest, spiking crime, suicide, depression, domestic abuse, etc. That is why I think the "what is your number?" question about the number of acceptable deaths is a poorly framed question.
By no means am I calling myself an authority on any of these topics, but there are several vantage points to consider.

I don't understand when you say mentality?
Why can't i be both aware of what's going on in the world and enjoy my own life. To me awareness is the key.
Today i started up my enduro, it was a bit chilly for it, but man i enjoy riding that thing. I've gone fishing on nice days, so about every 3rd day. Looking forward to the golf courses opening.
It's kind of nice getting a taste of what retired life would be like. Have to say i have something to look forward to. |

Hopefully soon? If the data suggests April 14 was a key date in Illinois, then end of May based on that idiot Dr i listen to.

The docs aren’t sure yet. They also aren’t sure how long immunity, if any, lasts. It’s a new version of COVID, and they’re learning on the fly.
Quickest solution is a drug treatment that works, and can take the fear of death off the table. There’s a drug in testing at U of Chicago that’s promising. Vaccines take much longer, we’re at least a year away from that. - scottak
Probably longer than that, there is still no vaccines for HIV, SARS, HEP C |

Rewatching the first two episodes of Last Dance. How many titles do you think Chicago missed out on in the 90s b/c of ownership not wanting to spend money? 2-3 total between the Hawks and Bulls?
Hawks didn’t want to pay anyone and Bulls didn’t want to pay Pippen or Phil..... we could’ve had two golden eras of Chicago sports. |

There ya go!! That’s what I’m talking about, be happy!! Still lots to enjoy in life if you look on the bright side. Even with this crisis going on there’s always something you can look to that cheers you up, in your case it’s fishing and riding your bike. Good stuff!! “Find your happy place”, as Chubs once said... |

It's the same reason you probably won't see a vaccine for HIV or Hep C...too many mutations and genotypes to account for.
Plus antiviral therapies are very effective for both, particularly HCV where cure rates are in the 90+% range.
Also, hockey...
Probably cause the Hawks won't be in the playoffs, I don't really have an issue scrapping the rest of the season.
Was reading something in Second City though where they are trying to figure out how to do so and there's a suggestion that each division plays out the remaining string in one city...for the Central it was in Minneapolis/St. Paul I believe. |
