Have you seen It Might Get Loud? Pretty great documentary with White, Jimmy Page, and the Edge:

- NewYorkNuck

Yes I have. Very good even though I’m not a huge fan of The Edge. When Jack makes a guitar out of a bunch of scraps at the beginning of the doc it blew me away.

What I'm saying is that ignoring the concerns of a group of employees because they are well compensated is wrong.

Many players have said that having to ramp up training in a short period to complete the season creates unwanted health risks (injury concerns). Imagine you are a veteran player who has a year or two of productive service to the NHL left. You are an UFA at the end of this season. You work your ass off to get back to playing shape over a 3 week "training camp" and tear an abdominal muscle or something requiring surgery and an 8 month recovery time. Your career is now done in all likelihood.

- 1970vintage

firstly, it's not ignoring the concerns of a group of employees. those employees are represented by an association that represents their interests. the league will not start up without agreement from the PA. if individual players do not want to play, they don't have to. it's as simple as that. there will be ramifications such as not being paid or leaving a bad impression with your employer in the future. this may not affect stars but moreso the bottom tier players. it's entirely their decision to play or not play. no one can be forced to play.

conversely, if the majority of players want to play but some don't, should the minority overrule that decision? the PA will poll their players and make their decision based on that.

secondly, injuries are always a reality. you may be right that it could be more prevalent but the flip side of the coin is that these professionals should have been keeping themselves in shape while the league has been suspended.

the league will not come back without a mini-training camp. this will allow them to get back into game shape.

i'll remind you that regular training camps are only a few days long now and pre-season starts pretty much right away. players are expected to keep themselves in shape during the off season. this is no different than what they have been going through now with the exception of being able to skate. with rinks opening up now, this will give them the same opportunity to get their bodies acclimated just like summer skating before camp or in this case mini camp starts.

edit: but yeah, his "compensation logic" was out to lunch.

perhaps he's just more into short stories. you should paste "bartleby the scrivener" next time.

it is to those that get paid within the industry (whether they make a lot or a little.)

"american epic" was a really entertaining documentary. if anyone hasn't seen it, i'd highly recommend it.

Canadians resent people who make “too much money”. Americans worship them.

It’s one of our cultural differences that separates us.

lefty alluded to it earlier but these guys are literally the best 1000 out of 7.5 billion people at something that people are entertained by. they're compensated as such.

the argument is that society values ridiculous things but you can't force people to like or value what you want them to.

i mean, LH's favourite band is creed. who's to tell him that he can't like them.

My sister makes about 110K, maybe more. Weekends off, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 in March and 8 in the summer.

Don't anybody give me a lecture on how hard teachers work, both my parents were principals at some point. Some teachers work hard at times, but it's really nothing out of the ordinary most of the time.

Spring break is actually two weeks now in most BC school districts.

You also forgot to mention the 6 'professional development' days off each year, Easter Monday (not technically a stat holiday) plus the numerous paid sick days, 'mental health days', etc.

Then there's the custodial days with limited to no instruction. First and last weeks of school, last days before any break, November 1st (day after Halloween), etc.

Their level of compensation is very, very generous relative to most private-sector workers with similar levels of qualifications, education, and responsibility. Their militant unions have served them well.

How's your garden coming along? We ate asparagus from ours last night. Sadly, it was a few spears each, and now we're done for the season

Rhubarb is starting to look good, hopefully we get strawberries soon to make pie.

It has been a ton of work, our property slopes quite a bit so we have been carving and making level areas. Then we haul blast rock up by wheelbarrow to reinforce the new level area. We started seedlings indoors over a month ago and everything but the Habanero Peppers are sprouting. Going to wait another week or two before planting them outside.

No one said it’s important, just something people like watch and enjoy so they pay for it. The players simply share in that income.

“ The Canadian economy is likely in its deepest recession on record and will only recover modestly over the coming year as it takes a direct hit from the coronavirus outbreak and a collapse in oil prices, a Reuters poll of economists showed.

After the economy contracted sharply last month and lost a record 1.01 million jobs, economists have slashed back their economic forecasts because of lockdown measures and reeling oil prices, which hit a record low last week as global economic activity came to a halt.

In the April 23-28 Reuters poll of 25 economists, Canada’s economy was predicted to have contracted at an annualized rate of 9.8 per cent last quarter and to shrink 37.5 per cent this quarter.

In a January poll, they predicted 1.6-per-cent and 1.7-per-cent growth, respectively, showing just how abruptly the economy has turned. If the latest forecasts are realized, it would mark the deepest recession in at least six decades.

“Canada is in the midst of an historic economic contraction. The economy has largely shut down, paralyzed by measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic, free-falling financial markets, plunging oil prices and plummeting confidence,” said Tony Stillo, director of Canada economics at Oxford Economics.”

From the Globe & Mail......but at least the draft will be in June and we can discuss gardens

Is this one of those left wing media sites reporting this, what does The Toronto Sun or Sun Media, The Rebel or even Fox News have to report?

We have the most boring society, we’re more worried about hurting someone’s feelings than doing what is best/right sometimes...I said sometimes. It’s so vanilla we’re fast becoming a Scandinavian country equivalent.

My buddy took an engineering PM job in Norway, he was there about two weeks when they were having an important meeting and one of the ladies got up to leave so he asked her where she’s going and she said she had a yoga class downstairs LOL. He told her to sit down until the meeting was over so she went to HR and complained and he got in trouble.

He’s like, how the (frank) do they get anything done around here, people work about 20 hours a week and go to yoga classes while they’re working, they even have sleep rooms so you can rest if you’re tired

That sounds like a lot of work, why don’t you just hire someone and watch them while you sit in the backyard sipping drinks and smoking Cuban cigars?

Of course they are, they don’t have to do (frank) all and they get handsomely paid for it. Of course the offshore oil and gas in Norway has provided that kind of quality living for them.

Ya, I had no idea why The Edge was up there with those two... after watching it, I gained a greater respect for what he does, but I don't think he's anything near their level of skill. He's been able to fuse a sound of electronics and guitar.

Easy fix - full face plastic shields and N95 masks under that. Individual water bottles managed by someone in a hazmat suit. It would certainly speed up game play as the after the whistle shenanigans would basically disappear.
