I can see them figuring out the opening of professional sports(no fans) in the coming weeks but I can’t see them starting to open things back up until June 1st at the earliest. Everything is already shut down until May 15th, Memorial Day weekend in the following weekend. Can’t see them wanting the type of gatherings that will happen that quick. A June 1st slow go until a full blown opening by 4th of July weekend IMO is the way to go.

The school year is done from what I understand and I know the people in charge at Buff State are already set up for online only classes to for the start of the Fall semester. They have no plan to open up campus until November at the earliest.

NHL will supposedly need 3 weeks of camp anyways

And whenever they get all the players back,
they’ll all have to be tested,
then quarantined for 2 weeks,
then tested again

The process to get back to playing games will take a bit

I don't believe the above is true at all, based on other contracts and $7M looking like the new level set.

I don't think he would have taken anything less than $7M per long term back when they had the chance to sign him to a longer term.

- kingcong39

That was the same year Pasternak’s deal was signed and he had a better body of work.

Maybe $6M was a little light, but we would have gotten him between $6-$6.50M

Some talk going around that Euros are being told to get back over here by mid May
- jdfitz77

There is also talk of the rosters being expanded to 30 players when the league begins playing again.

He wasn't taking a full term 8 year deal as he wanted to cash in on big pay day's twice, and the Sabres were not going to offer the term that Matthews and Marner got.

I see this sort of thing get brought up all the time, and it's only ever based on actual salary and not percent of the cap at the time the deal was signed, which makes a big difference.

Pastrnak was signed at 8.89% of the cap (almost 3 years ago), which would be equal to $7.345M per based on this year's cap.

Draisaitl was signed at 11.33% of the cap (almost 3 years ago as well), which would be equal to $9.234M per based on this year's cap.

There was a ton of talk, from a lot of Oilers fans, about the massive deal Draisaitl signed in 2017.

GM's are basically taking this approach: I am confident that Player X will at least perform at the level they are now for the length of the long term deal I am about to offer them, and if they do, as the cap continues to rise, it will become a value deal. If they progress further and perform even better than they are now, the deal will be an even better value.

It's almost entirely based on continuing the current level of performance combined with the idea that the salary cap will always rise.

- kingcong39

Sure, and what suggested that this would not continue before Covid-19 ?

The Cap always goes up, and you lock in your elite players during the duration of their primes.

That’s why Boston always is able to stay competitive. Look at Marchand, Bergeron, Krejci, and now Pasternak’s deals.

What really helps Boston is how Marchand and Pastrnak have had their production explode post their deals being signed.

The Sabres haven't had that happen in...forever? Eichel is it that I can think of.

He wasn’t taking on a full 8 yr at 5.7-6.2 a year and the Sabres weren’t doing more than that nor only a 5 yr deal.

Now he’s only looking at one big payday. An 8 yr deal takes him to 32 going on 33.

In the end he probably left money on the table as by 32 his foot speed will be an issue. Chances are he’s have gotten another pay day @ 30, right before his foot speed falls off a cliff.

Fair point, there is risk involved forsure.

The Sabres do a really good job though of paying players for past performance and getting caught holding the bag though.

Krejci and Bergeron both signed for over 10% of the cap while Marchand and Pasta were around 8.5%. This would put Sam between $6.7m to $8.7m based on the range of cap % those guys make.
I would think $6-6.5m would be a fair offer. That is 7.4% to 8%.

I think it's noteworthy that you justify Dahlin's contract on his career long performance and criticize Sam's opportunity for a long term signing based on 40 games of one season. I know you watched the first half of Dahlins season this year. That's doesn't trouble you as much as Sam's "vacation" did, apparently?
- Der Kaiser

On guy starting slow as a 19 year old.

Other guy who's on John Jack's line and 24 year old finished off the season on a 8 game pointless streak heading into vacation.

Slight differences :10 fewer points in 10 fewer games for dahlin as well.

It was not necessary. We’re a bottom feeder when he was scoring 40 and a bottom feeder this year. That contract is the worst in the league right now. In a salary cap league contracts are value, and the argument can be made that skinner has the lowest value of any player in the league right now.

Now you pay Reinhart more money and your in cap hell paying tow wingers 16 million that need Jack to even be good.

Fire Botts today

- Fattony1187

I'm starting to agree with the potential skinner buy out if they are allowing 1 per team.

Maybe move okposo to a team that uses the buyout on him?

Botts wont buy out skinner, but a new guy might

From a different article by Joe back on March 31st:

I am on board with the idea of keeping Larsson (price pending as I would never pay him $3M per) and also going after the trio of Craig Smith (C/RW), Pat Maroon (4th line LW/RW), and Tyler Toffoli (LW/RW).

In order for the above to be possible, trades absolutely have to happen.

https://theathletic.com/1...-agent-class-of-forwards/

A few interesting candidates pop up on this list. We know Hall is going to cash in with someone and the same is likely for Hoffman, as both will get long-term deals. Since we’re not trying to break the bank wide open, we’ll look a little lower. This is where Craig Smith is interesting. He’s good for about 20 goals per season and when he’s on the ice his team gets a lot of shots off (career 53.6 even strength Corsi).

Toffoli is really intriguing as well. He’s a guy that would’ve been an ideal buy-low candidate a year ago, but he’s picked it back up this season with L.A. and Vancouver. When the Kings were steadily good, he was a key contributor. He peaked with 31 goals and 58 points in 2015-2016 but he’s capable of 20-plus goals and plays with speed. He’s also going to get a lot of attention if he’s a free agent. He’s from Scarborough, Ontario though. Maybe he’d want to be closer to home like fellow Scarborough native Simmonds.

Would you run me out of town for arguing to keep Larsson and Vesey? Don’t pack my bags yet, but finding players of equal or better value than them will be difficult. Larsson ranks out as one of the better players in the potential UFA forward group and Vesey is right there with him. Smith, Spezza, and Toffoli are all about on par with Vesey and you could argue you’d get more offense from Smith and Toffoli than Vesey.

Keep in mind Vesey is having a down offensive year while not being a liability defensively. If the goals come back (and his career-low shooting 9.7 shooting percentage says they should) it’d be a solid rebound for a guy who’s put up 16 or 17 goals per season before this one.

Simmonds would love to stay in Buffalo and Girgensons had a very good season on a line with Larsson and Kyle Okposo. Keeping both of them could mean asking veteran players to sit out occasionally and that’s probably not something any veteran wants to sign up to do. Letting both players go and signing Patrick Maroon to play the left side with Larsson and Okposo would bring in a physical player who can score occasional goals and recently won a Stanley Cup with St. Louis. If you're going to make a change to a group that's done well, getting a positive player like Maroon (career 52.6 Corsi at even strength) would indicate a fix for a toughness "problem" and add a winner to the group.

Keeping: Larsson, Vesey

Losing: Girgensons, Frolik, Simmonds, Wilson, Sobotka

Go after: Smith, Maroon, Toffoli
