It’s all of the above, we suck at drafting.
Sure Reinhart is a good hockey player, but at 2OA you should get an elite hockey player, like how the Oilers did one pick after. - Pegullaville
As opposed to when the Oilers drafted Yakupov number 1 overall... |

Yep, and they continued to suck because they wiffed that pick and lucked themselves into the situation they are in now.

Most 2nd overalls can play right away but not ours and he couldn't play his position so they had to get a true #2. He showed it in development camp, preseason and the 9 games. - GilPerreault11
The above is nonsense.
Leon Draisaitl sucked his rookie year. He couldn't play right away either, but hey, he was a 3rd overall not a 2nd, so you're cherry picking criteria will still work for your foolish, hindsight way of thinking. |

That's a total ret con of what happened.
The Sabres had Eichel and ROR down the middle, and rather than play - I dont know, Brian Gionta - at 1RW, they moved Reinhart to wing rather than play him in limited minutes at center.
So he became a winger
Then the Sabres traded ROR and Reinhart was a winger and they had no plan of what to do
Stop blaming Reinhart for the continual ineptitude of the Sabres - jcragcrumple
Since going pro, Reinhart has only had a chance to play down the middle twice, and they hardly count. The first time was when Reinhart was an 18-year old rookie on a tanking Sabres team for 9-games. Are we really going to count his playing ten minutes a night with the likes of Zenon Konopka as a real chance to play center?
The second time Reinhart played down the middle was in 2017-18 when Phil Housley first got here as head coach. Housley didn't give Reinhart a real chance at success. In the week or so that Reinhart played center under Housley, his most common linemates were Zemgus Girgensons, Nick Baptiste, and Seth Griffith. Two AHL players and a career fourth liner. Housley pulled the plug very quickly and never tried Reinhart at center again.

They have their own version of Crosby and Malkin.
Now when they win a cup or two do you think anyone will bring up the fact that they were a joke from 2006 till recently ?
I doubt it. |

If Reinhart could carry his own load on the second line the Sabres would be a different team. The truth hurts. Anyway, he is one of the Sabres disasters. The tank crashed largely because of him. He was the start and he didn't guide it in a straight and steady manner. |

It's highly debatable if either of them play enough defense to be considered in the same league as overall players like Crosby and Malkin. |

The Sabres tank strategy focused on getting stronger down the middle so they go and draft Reinhart as a center who can't play center. That (frank)ed up the initial tank, he (frank)ed up the initial tank. Wings are nice, but centers drive lines, so they have to go into their prospect pool to get ROR. Bummer. - GilPerreault11
I disagree with this history recap. |

If you read carefully my one post yes. If he could play center they wouldn't have had to trade for ROR the next year as their #2, Compher would be their #3,Nikita Zadorov would be a D or he or Risto could have been traded for a wing. He is the root of the Sabres disaster - GilPerreault11

If you want to say Reinhart isnt a good enough 2OA pick, go for it. But there are plenty worse picks at 1 or 2 in the past 10 years.
The fact that people are scapegoating a player taken six (frank)ing years ago for being a good winger instead of a good center is not the place to start in my opinion.
This problem that we have now - no 2C - is 20 months old. It's learning to walk and talk. Blaming Reinhart is completely irrational in my opinion. It's irrelevant and erroneous. They've had years to do so.
Fix the problem |

Which is a very fair observation, they have time to refine their 200 foot games.
Offensively speaking though, they are both already there.

Why can’t both be right ?
Whiffing on Reinhart franked us
Our managements ineptitude to over pay for ROR, then get minimal in return franked us.
Our ability to replace ROR is franking us.
It’s all one big frank up that goes right up to the top of the organization. |

As most know, I don't do the fancy stats.
But this article is loaded with them, and the author writes these sentences:
"That's more 5v5 points than players such as Sebastian Aho, Sean Monahan, Kyle Connor, Mathew Barzal and Ryan O’Reilly."
and
"We can also use another advanced statistic to evaluate just how impactful Sam Reinhart is. Evolving-Hockey created a goals above replacement stat that attempts to assign a value to each individual player using their even-strength offense, even-strength defense, powerplay offense, shorthanded defense, as well as penalties taken and drawn. It is essentially a statistic that values every part of the player’s game, so it’s more than just points. In terms of expected goals above replacement this season, Sam Reinhart ranks 29th in the league, right around the likes of Brayden Point, John Carlson, and Pierre-Luc Dubois. That is certainly some pretty impressive company to be in."

Point -- 3 years @ $6.75
Carlson -- 8 years @ $8.0
DuBois -- Projected $7.35 x 7 |

I dont think Reinhart is a whiff. Bennett was a whiff.
Not addressing a clearly visible center deficiency in 22 months is a whiff.
Just fix the problem. If that means trading Reinhart, go for it. Scapegoating Reinhart because he was moved from center when we had two good centers five years ago is beyond absurd to me |

I never said that, sir.
If anything they traded for ROR to have 3 horses down the middle, and build the right way.
Unfortunately, the Sam at Center experiment didn’t last/work. |

I did escalate but he was the initial year's tank reward and who was supposed to be a valuable center aaaand he ends up being Jack's tragically hip partner |
