Interesting — NHL agent Kurt Overhardt advocates for creation of an “Exceptional” player to ease salary-cap concerns when NHL resumes. Teams using it could have to pay a luxury tax to those who don’t.

It’s hard to imagine NHL commissioner Gary Bettman going for this. At all. Especially considering the lengths the league has gone through in his tenure to establish a cap system and a 50/50 revenue split with the players. The owners like this system. They like the parity.

I hadn’t even finished reading the highlights of this proposal to one NHL general manager when he shot it down.

“We have a system. … Anything that gives the players more than 50 percent is a nonstarter. There’s no owner that would want this,” he said. “Gary won’t even listen.”

You’d probably get 30 similar responses from the other GMs, and Overhardt anticipates this pushback. This would certainly qualify under what the league might call “seepage” – money that falls outside the hard cap. They’ve worked hard to eliminate seepage – like adjusting rules to set limits on how much money can be stashed in the AHL.

I completely agree that they’re not going to do anything that gives the players a bigger share. This is survival time for a bunch of franchise. I do think think that if they want to save some of the weaker teams those teams can’t insist on protecting parity at all costs. MLSE and others are not just going to write a bigger cheque and say happy to have you in the league.

So they need a plan that allows overall player salaries to come down while minimizing the reduction in the total amount of money going to players. I still think the best way to do that is set an overall spending level for the league but allow more flexibility between teams in the form of a wider gap between floor and ceiling.
