A lot of people are speculating on the CAP, and if Hawks will need to trade salaried players like D-cat or others. First, If Cap is stagnant or even drops some. There will not be many teams wanting mid or high salary guys. Also, there will be MANY teams trying to move salary, so it will be EXTREMELY difficult to move anybody without getting screwed in the return.
That said, I think the Hawks are in a MUCH better spot than most teams, because they can decide to employ a different roster configuration, and may play a roster with more of their young prospects than they would originally have done.
The Hawks could decide to let the young prospects all learn together at the NHL level, and at the same time make it much easier to fit under the CAP. Is it ideal?...No. But, it would allow the Hawks much more flexibility than many teams. Take Tampa, or the Leafs as examples. They are already maxed, and nowhere to really free up money. Unless they decide to trade one of the "untouchables", they can add only entry level fodder.
The Hawks COULD decide to let 3-4 of their young D-men play in the 7 defencemen they roster. All these guys would be at extremely low CAP hits. Depending on health, re-signings, etc...The Hawks COULD use a 7 of Keith, Murphy, Boqvist, Mitchell, Carlsson, DeHaan and Seabrook. Or if Seabrook a bonus buy out that league allows...big CAP savings by going with Boudin or Maatta as 7th guy.
Just saying....by having a decent group of young, cheap D-man to juggle around in the line-up, a flat CAP...especially if accompanied by a "One-time" buy-out, could actually HELP the Hawks more-so than it would help MANY of the top teams!
lol....and by Help the Hawks...I hope you know I really mean, it could very easily HURT other teams MUCH more than the Hawks. And at our stage of development and "Cup" contention....really not hurt us much at all...cuz, we are still a couple years from REALLY being a factor. So, let the Top teams REALLY feel the hurt, for us...it will just means a little different way of thinking. |

This is very possible Hawks35.
The Hawks could be in an ok spot and might have to go down the forced youth path.
This is another reason that guys like Crawford who are UFAs, who want to stay put in their current city could sign for less. Or at least a structure with a lower salary cap with performance bonuses included. |

But:
They have TV negotiations coming up - and with sports (including NBC’s Olympics) shut down, networks need programming. I’m guessing NBC would be putting a lot of pressure on the NHL (and other networks on the other leagues) to provide live programming.
And I’m guessing the NHL hand the other leagues will bend over backwards (or frontwards, to kiss TV asses), as they usually do. - StLBravesFan
There's talk about going straight into a 24 team playoff format without finishing the regular season. The first round may be a best of three. These 1st round games will give the networks some extra games to televise in lieu of the remaining regular season games.
So how would a 24 team playoff work? Top eight teams (4 per conference) get a bye and remaining 16 teams play the first round? Then the 8 winners from the first round get seeded against the 8 bye teams and go from there? |

I don't think players got paid in 2005 but the players got paid this year. - 6628
The owners also didn’t receive more than 2/3 of a season worth of gate receipts in 2005 either. I’d say they are money ahead from 2005 when they took their ball and went home. |

I don't see how it will be such a financial crises for the NHL . They shut it down 1919 for the Spanish Flu ,they did it 2005 for greed .They should shut it down now for the public good as they did in 1919 .
I also think Bettmam idea to move up the Draft for ratings and exposure for the league is ghoulish on the back of a pandemic .
Leave the schedule alone. Draft lottery ,Draft ,FA . and hope to start on time next year .. - oldduffman
I think the draft move up is public relations but all to segue into a playoff.
Hey...at least the both sides the players association and league owners are working together so that they can get TO a SOLUTION, a finality...besides,
the one that has caused 75,000 US deaths is not "vanishing with out a vaccine" like our "leader" just said but SCIENTISTS are currently say that the new dominant strain of the virus (that morphed) is appears MORE contagious than the original.
Today the extreme fighter who tested positive was just "benched" and the show was set to go on.
So expect playoff hockey to restart w/o fans, but when Sydney Crosby tests positive, he gets isolated for what three weeks (even though we are not sure that is the correct time frame yet (again, it is called leadership) and the team plays their playoff minus him....
this continues in each 7 game series until the Tampa Vegas finally where a Lightning team minus Hedman, Point, Palat and Sergachev defeats a under staffed Vegas Knights team that is bolstered by the likes of Cody Glass and Brandon Pirri and Jake Leschyshyn filling in for the ill and quarantined William Karlsson, Mark Stone and Paul Stastny...they helped the Golden Knights in the conference final but then were tested positive maybe catching it from Alec Martinez who spent the lockout time in his California home.
My sole point is they want some finality to this...the lost revenues (though some get recouped by the Tv and sponsorships), the hardship an early draft with no trades causes... all are secondary to finishing, getting everybody home to get ready for the next version of the pro sports in NHL 2020-21.
I wouldn't make more of it than that. |

I just want the league to grow a pair and punish Arizona for their early prospect testing...because as it stands they now have a true leg up on whatever abbreviated version the non cheating teams will be part of.
Sure the Coyotes dont has a first or a third...and I will be using their second rounder as touchstone...
to see if they did get a true leg up.
Not sure they 4th 5th 6th and 7th round picks are guys they already put through testing (because this prospects will probably be long gone)...but I would take that 2nd away ad believe me no team will try and do what they did.
In a secondary note, I have a written profile up on ALL of the guys listed in my mock's first four rounds and many of the guys after that.
My eyes are glossy and I stayed up doing it, but my goal is IF I am quarrantined from leaving to visit my 4 grandchildren in others states, missingbvtheir birthdays for the first time, I might as well go ball deep with scratching out these evaluations so you didn't hear them regurgitated by some other prognosticator or site, like Corey Pronman.
Or why I think Jan Myšák is not necessarily "one of the best forwards in the 2020 draft" like the Athletic's Scott Wheeler does, maybe not even a first rounder!

Last night, spent some time watching highlights on Askarov. It's generally difficult for me to watch goalies and make assessments.
Not in this case. I love this kid.
Better than Spencer Knight last year, who I considered a "goalie exception" to make early in the first.
If Askarov is not the pick at 9 (assuming that slot is final) I riot. |

If you had a chance to watch the kid on the Rangers after they brought him up...except for the fact Askarov is that odd duck right glove goaltender, they play fast but don't get jumpy...until they have to.
Really fast reflexes, and reset...I think Askarov is REALLY good and Won't be a dude...but a franchise guy for a team long term, but the thing that rocks true with the Ranger's kid Igor Shesterkin, two forwards and a back-up who help him not be lonely...and more Russian kids on the way.
Tampa got themselves two other Russian speakers enroute too.Plus Brighton Beach Russian population that granted has a religious tone in it's own segregated way...
and this isn't an issue IF the kid knows English well, and brings family and and avoids culture shock.
No one wants Askarov sitting in one of the Downtown Wirstz one properties walking to McDonald's most of the time, the Russian Tea room for a treat and quickie mart tempatations he have never ever seen before.
I am telling you at NINE or TEN there are going to be a lot of players you are not hearing about from the draft folks that the teams like...and many many many will be gone BEFORE the beloved Indianhead walks to the microphone...so those guys above Lindell on my board, I would not be surprised if more than two are there for the hawks and I would not be surprised if the hawks have locked in on kids in that grouping and BELOW...bcause there are EXCELLENT choices in that range and beyond...

I have the exact thoughts even before the postponed or delay to the season. Shaw on LT disability/concussion protcol is also a factor in cap evaluation.
The monkey wrench would be greater expectation from for the team success gauged by the W-L metric from Rocky himself

Wait? Did Wiz describe his research as going balls deep? - Elbows15
Yup and after my wife asked me to fo the first time (as she has cancelled all hair appointments and stayed in now from March 11th) if I could do what her stylist does pluck a few unsightly hair under her chin, I posted on Facebook to OUR FRIENDS that this time in the house has allowed me to explore new parts of her body....was she pissed...and it is down.
Ball's deep, like me watching and rewatching and rewatching and refusing to let these outside "experts" words be read to influence my feeble brain....every year two weeks before I read stuff and get nervous re-arrange my first round and at least two prospects that DO GET selected in the first are now early in the second and the highly touted ones I nervously added don't get their nam called in the first.
Oh, and I also thought the football commish dis a superb job reading 'pronouncing and connecting with the fans...If the league doesn't advise Gary to use a TSN like combination of announcers who work junior games or international games and basically hand them the ball, he will look inferior to Roger Goodell (is that his name didn't even KNOW it until that draft broadcast, as I am basically a one sport pony).
Let Gary cheer lead, Ok New Jersey, the first of your two new additions and your future, next up,LEt's go Buffalo, and hand the call the pronunciation to the announcers, no delay to have the Buffalo GM Jason Botterill call up Assistant Equipment Manager, George Babcock (on the snowmobile they bought him), or Terry Pegula's 8 yr. old grand daughter try and say,"Alexander Holtz"
If the NHL PAYS someone to lead this new way of doing the event, he better have the cahonoes (there twice now, elbows) to TAKE the public relation part of this to a decision where cosmetically the league looks good not a nasally tone ego pissing contest with the NFL... |

At 9th Askarov would be a steal ,I think NJ will grab him at 5th or 6th what ever they pick .Maybe not, NJ may think teams still think Russian bad and goalie worse with a top ten pick .And his subpar WJC may have them let him slide thinking they can pick him with their 2nd pick in the 1st rd.
I hope the HAWKS don't screw this up if they get a shot at him .Without some big surprise early in the draft Askarov will be easily be BPA at 9th |
